The Voice 20 Top 17: Dana Monique Tears the House Down with an En Vogue Cover
On paper Dana Monique’s song choice of En Vogue’s “Free Your Mind” for her The Voice Top 17 performance seemed a bit dated and nothing new. But the way she performed and sang it felt fresh for The Voice stage. I have not seen a female rock out in such a soulful way since Kimberly Nichole from season 8. Dana’s previous performances bored me a bit, but this is the exact moment she needed to have.
She came out with a vengeance looking to get the public vote. You could see it in Dana’s eyes and performance that she wants this. She wants it more than anyone. I wish former coach Jennifer Hudson was there to witness Dana throwing her hat. Would she have retrieved it and thrown it back at her? All I can say is that hat-throwing moment and the entire performance was a true moment!
All 4 coaches stood, and Dana did get things thrown at her by Kelly Clarkson. Kelly said that she just sang backup for her during her performance, and would love to sing backup for her generally. Originally, Kelly said, she dreamed of singing backup for a powerful singer like Dana. Kelly even called the powerhouse singer her “spirit animal.” Nick Jonas added that she “blew it out of the park” and is honored to be her coach.
Nick’s team is one of the weaker of the four, but does have front runners in Rachel Mac and Dana Monique. It would be a travesty if we lost either one at this point as the others on his team like Andrew Marshall, 4-Way Knockout Winner Devan Blake Jones (surprisingly), and Jose Figueroa Jr. are clearly inferior. I think the public vote could go either way with Rachel and Dana, but the Coaches Save should go to the artist who doesn’t get voted through.
Historically, soulful females like Dana don’t win The Voice, but she could be the lone female powerhouse who stays tonight. Zania Alake and Pia Renee didn’t deliver impressive performances last night. Both could both be eliminated, unless Team Legend saves one of them.
