The Voice 20 T0p 9 Rachel Mac is Only Human
Rachel Mac, the 15 year-old soulful country tinged pop singer from Michigan loves Blake Shelton but has formed a connection with her The Voice coach Nick Jonas like no other. He compared her to Kacey Musgraves, Olivia Rodrigo, and Billie Eilish in his mentor session for her Top 9 performance Monday night (May 17). Each singer is different from each other but possess one commonality. They all are very stylistic vocalists with great tonal qualities, just like Rachel.
Rachel sang Christina Perri’s “Human” for her The Voice Top 9 semifinal performance. On paper this song choice was great, but her youth and inexperience showed at times during the performance. Although, she is typically one of my favorites, she is just a bit green. Her voice sounded nice to start but she was a bit pitchy throughout on the higher notes. But she ended the song strong. Her usual almost yodel-like delivery on certain notes sounded a bit off. Rachel always goes for it, which I appreciate. Overall, she finished well and had a good recovery from what could’ve been an off performance. She conveyed the emotion pretty well and some of her vocal choices were interesting enough that I don’t think the pitch problems plagued the performance for voters.
John Legend stated, “You gave us the full range of emotion on stage tonight” Kelly Clarkson continued by saying “Job well done” to Rachel. Her very own coach, Nick Jonas was proud of her bravery, telling Rachel, “You nailed the vocal performance.”
Going into Tuesday, I am assuming Rachel will be safe as she fits the voter demographic more than fellow Team Nick member Dana Monique.. I think she really needed to mess up to lose the vote at this point. Comparably, I found her and Rachel on similar levels this week, with Dana maybe slightly edging Rachel. Rachel’s previous few performances have built up a loyal fan base and that should be enough here to keep her safe.
