On The Voice, covering a coach’s hit song is a big risk, but it paid off for Gymani who received a 4 chair turn after belting Ariana Grande’s “pov.”
The performance, airing tonight on the show, got Ariana up out of her seat. “That’s your song now,” Ariana gushed. “Take it!” Ariana wanted to push her button for the 23 year old from East Point, Georgia the second she started singing. “That was phenomenal,” Ariana added.
The coach noted how the young singer changed the song and made it her own. “There were so many alterations to the melody,” Ariana said. “And I trusted every single one of them.” Ariana called the singer a “messenger of emotions” and “an incredibly effective communicator.” Ariana was honored that Gymani sang her song, and would be “so honored” if she chose her team.
John Legend agreed that Gymani made the song “so much your own” and he heard a little bit of Jill Scott. He offered that he knows the music that she loves. Ariana insisted that she does too, and said that for the rest of her life, when she sings “pov” she’ll say “Oh, I’m covering Gymani’s song!”
Gymani revealed that she’s a mother of two, at which point Kelly Clarkson interjected, “Me too! We have so much in common!” She added, “I had to turn around, because you are so incredibly gifted” and insisted that “I have no one on my team like you.” Kelly also complimented the singer’s ear for music, noting that Ariana songs are hard to cover. “She’s really good at breath control. She has Celine Dion-type lungs.”
Blake Shelton admitted that he’s fighting an uphill battle, and then he accused Kelly of lying about having no one on her team like Gymani. John believes that the argument is pointless, calling Gymani’s talent “singular.”
