The Voice 24 Blind Audition Preview: Dylan Carter moves Reba to Tears with Whitney Houston “I Look to You” cover
The Voice 24 blind auditions come to an end on Monday (Oct 16) with a performance so moving it not only turns 4 chairs, but has the coaches tearing up.
Twenty year old contestant Dylan Carter sings an earnest and powerful rendition of Whitney Houston’s “I Look to You” that moves Reba McEntire in particular.
“I love that song,” Reba tells Dylan in a just-released preview. “I love songs–when you can take it spiritual or secular, either one. So much emotion, and I saw it and I felt it and I heard it when you were singing.” Reba can’t finish her next sentence as she chokes up.
“I saw you get so emotionally involved,” she continues. “And that’s when you know you’ve got a great song and a great singer, when it touches your heart.”
“That means so much!” says Dylan, as Reba responds, “To me as a performer, that is when you really hone into why you’re put on this earth, that is to touch people’s hearts, and you did.”
“You made the queen cry…you only get 4 chairs if it really moves the room”
“Wow. You made the queen cry, in the best way possible,” says Niall Horan. “That was spectacular. I could really feel the emotion. You only get four chairs if it really moves the room.” He could “feel a few pitch issues” when the coaches turned. “But that’s normal.”
“So much nerves,” Dylan responded.
“From the moment you opened your mouth,” says Gwen Stefani, “I was like, ‘This is my guy, I love your voice.’,” she adds, “Your voice is so warm, but you also have so much texture to your voice. Little nuances you were doing at the right exact moments that make it feel emotional.” It’s weird to Gwen that Dylan would be “that shocked” to receive 4 chairs. Gwen promises to be the nervous Dylan’s “cheerleader.”
Dylan sang the song at his mother’s funeral and couldn’t get through it. “This was the best second chance. I made her proud.”
John Legend remarks on how the emotion of the song is “really real” to Dylan. “When I saw y’all turn around, I saw my mom, she passed back in October,” he shares. “She wanted me to sing it at her funeral. So, I did it, I tried, but I couldn’t make it through it. This was the best second chance. I made her so proud.”
“This was her dream before it was mine,” Dylan explains. “We all felt it too,” says John, “I know your mother is proud of you.”
Reba shares a personal story about her mother, who inspired her to pursue show business. “If you do this,” her mother said about moving to Nashville, “I’ll be living my dreams through you.”
“That’s how this feels,” says Dylan. “I hear her, through me.” Reba concludes, “Mamas are so special. We’re very blessed to have them, right?”
