The Voice 24 Playoffs: Kara Tenae fights for a spot on Team Gwen Stefani with exquisitely controlled “Rain” by SWV

The Voice 24 Playoffs are in full swing. Last week, Team Niall Horan whittled his team from 6 members down to 3 artists who will compete in the live shows. On Monday (Nov 27) members of Team Gwen Stefani and Team Reba McEntire will fight for those coveted Live show spots.

In the latest preview from NBC, Team Gwen singer Kara Tenae performs SWV’s “Rain.” The song, a 1998 girl group hit, peaked at No. 25 on the US Billboard Hot 100 singles chart and No. 7 on the US Hot R&B Singles chart.

Kara turned 3 chairs after performing Ella Mai’s “Boo’d Up” in the Blind Auditions. Team Gwen nabbed her, and advanced her through every round including the 3-way Knockout where Kara impressed with a performance of JoJo’s “Leave (Get Out).”

The R&B singer lends a contemporary vibe to any song she sings with her pure tone, tasteful runs and perfectly placed ad libs. Her vocal control is amazing.

Niall Horan and John Legend calls Kara’s Playoffs performance their favorite so far

Niall calls the performance his favorite that she’s ever done. “It was so good. You never over-perform,” he says, adding, “You always perform a song as it’s meant to be performed.”

“I’m feeling so nostalgic I absolutely love this song,” says John Legend. “It was so good for your voice. You sound magical. You look like a star on stage and you control your movements in a way that’s so savvy and beautiful. This was my favorite performance of yours as well.”

Gwen calls working with Kara “so fun” because she’s “really humble” and “eager to learn.” The coach thinks Kara has improved vocally. “Your voice has gotten warmer, you have a little bit of rasp,” Gwen says, adding, “I don’t think people understand how hard it is to be that in control of your voice and move on stage at the same time. That is pro stuff.”

The coaches come into the Playoffs with five team members. But in a new twist, each coach will choose an eliminated Knockouts contestant from any team. The coaches will reveal their surprise team member as they take the stage to perform for a spot in the Top 24.

The Voice 24 Playoffs part 2 airs on NBC Monday, Nov 24 at 8 pm ET PT.
