Team Dan + Shay – Justin & Jeremy Garcia vs Frank Garcia – Million Reasons by Lady Gaga
Dan + Shay covered this song as well. Dan suggests the duo work on the last part of the song. Justin and Jeremy are 17 year old high school students. They nabbed 3 chair turns. Frank lives in New York, but started with Mariachi music. He was a one-chair turn. Shay helps Frank with his phrasing.
Frank sings with a dusky tone that stands out. Justin & Jeremy are brothers and make the most of their sibling harmonies. But all three sound lovely singing in 3 part harmony. Dan + Shay will probably hang on to their only duo, but Frank deserves to advance. He’s interesting.
John calls Frank’s voice “gorgeous.” He would pick him. Reba calls the duo “fantastic.” She loves the way they sing together. She would pick them. Chance calls it “fire.” He jokes that he wants to steer them wrong. He believes the duo are the kind of artists who deserve to advance to the Playoffs. Dan jokes that he’ll leave the decision up to Shay. Dan + Shay choose Frank. Reba steals Justin & Jeremy. I didn’t see that coming! I thought for sure the duo would keep their duo.
Team Reba – William Alexander vs Zeya Rae – Just Give Me A Reason by P!nk and Nate Ruess
Chance and Reba both turned for William. Reba cried when William shared about the death of his grandfather. Zeya lost her job after her audition. Her single mother gave her “everything” she says. William felt he was pigeonholed as the “Indian kid” growing up. The singer was a one chair turn. Reba stresses that performers must hone in on their audience. When William and Zeya look at each, they really need to connect, she advises. Reba is excited that both singers improved a lot by the end of rehearsals.
Their voices don’t always mesh perfectly, but the two have their moments on the stage. Interestingly, they are best when they face each other on stage. It’s like they give each other confidence. Zeya has a really pretty head voice. She probably wins this. Or should.
Chance says if he had a steal, he would have used it. Shay can’t believe William is only 16. He feels he could open up more vocally. Dan felt the song was more in Zeya’s range. They would go with her. John felt William was trying to find his way around the melody, and did a good job. He would also pick Zeya. Agree that William could use more experience. Reba picks Zeya, William is eliminated.
Team Chance – Maddi Jane vs Nadège – Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You by Lauren Hill (Four Seasons)
NBC previewed this Battle earlier today. Watch it HERE. Chance and John both turned for Nadège. She sang Ordinary People with John. Then Chance sang it with her too. She picked Chance, surprising everyone. Madi sang and rapped and turned 4 chairs. Chance suggests that they keep it simple (Maddi wants to dance).
Maddi Jane lets a few big notes loose, while Nadège offers a few tasty riffs. Chance made sure that each artist got their chance to shine. Maddi has the most charisma, she stands out as both a singer and a performer. However, Nadège’s appeal is low key. It lures the listener in.
“I fought for both of you, and I’m so jealous that you are not on Team Legend right now,” said John. He felt that every melodic choice Maddi made was “flawless” boasting a “superstar swagger.” About Nadège, John said, “You make offbeat melodic choices I would have never thought to do..” John hinted that he may steal somebody.
Reba McEntire said, “You shared the stage like professionals. Your vocals are just so, as Chance would say, ‘dope’.” Reba asked to hear three or four more songs to help them make the decision.
Chance felt “fulfilled” by the performance. Nadège has something that’s “pure and earnest and real” about her, he says. The coach compliments her runs, which he calls “intricate and a little jazzy.” Maddi has a “superstar presence” which attracts people, he says, adding, “You have an amazing vocal strength.” Chance picks Maddi. John and Dan + Shay steal Nadège. John begins his pitch WASTE OF TIME. Chance uses his Playoff Pass. The Pass overrides a Steal. Nadège moves on to the Playoffs. John calls Chance HIS ENEMY.
