The Voice 26 Playoffs: Adam Bohanan’s Soulful Stapleton Cover is a Success

The Season 26 The Voice Playoffs continued on Monday night (Nov 26) with two more teams whittling five down to two singers that will advance to the live shows. Monday night consisted of Team Snoop Dogg who was mentored by Olympic gymnast Simone Biles and Team Reba McEntire who was mentored by country star Lainey Wilson. One singer who opened the night made a lasting impact, and that was 40-year-old Minneapolis, Minnesota native, Adam Bohanan. (Read our Recap)

Adam is singing Chris Stapleton’s “I Think I’m In Love With You” which he says he is trying to give an Al Green vibe to it. He has been married for six years, and his wife tells him he is “worth it” even when he has doubts. Lainey said, “He’s got it going on, he’s got that soul.” Reba wanted him to open his eyes more. Lainey advised that he “rope them in immediately.” She also suggested that he quit playing the guitar after the repetition of the hook to allow for him to connect more.

During his performance, Adam didn’t do anything groundbreaking arrangement wise, but he didn’t miss a note. The song was very much in his wheelhouse. His sound is reminiscent of soulful pop rock from the early 2000s like Gavin DeGraw, and his tone also has shades of TeddySwims who has been experiencing a huge year. The song sat there a bit, but the bit that Lainey advised him to do by losing the guitar for a second, did regain my attention as it allowed him to perform more freely and hit a few impressive, raspy notes. It was a solid performance and still a shocker that Adam was a one-chair turner to begin with.

“You keep getting better and better”

Gwen Stefani said, “it’s like it’s nothing for you to do that,” when commenting on how flawlessly Adam sings and plays the guitar. Michael Buble wants to drink whiskey with him and calls him an “artist” Snoop Dogg said, “you made me stand up. I normally don’t stand up.” Reba called out the moment of him losing the guitar and said, “you keep getting better and better.”

At the end of the night, Reba picked Adam Bohanan to advance along with her classic blues rocker, Danny Joseph who sang “I Heard it From The Grapevine.” It’s a bit surprising she chose both to advance as they both occupy a similar throwback lane and possess raspy, soulful sounds. The two did give the best vocals of the night for her team, so maybe she was looking for consistency. Lauren-Michael Sellers who sang Jelly Roll’s “I Am Not Okay” has been a front-runner the entirety of the competition, so it’s surprising to see her go.

The other team who performed tonight, Team Snoop Dogg advanced country singer Christina Eagle, and theatrical Jeremy Beloate. Jeremy’s “The Impossible Dream” was the moment of the night. I was also surprised to see front-runner Austyns Stancil go home, but his risky take on “Adore” by Prince where he sang in falsetto nearly the whole song did not pay off. The Playoffs will wrap up on Tuesday night with Team Bublé performing.
