Christina Eagle – Team Snoop – Man! I Feel Like a Woman! by Shania Twain
Christina shared about the devastating floods that occurred recently in her home state of North Carolina. Her performances comforted many of the local folk, she says. Snoop notes she was a 1-chair turn and the last mainstream country singer on the show. He suggests that she start off the song slower.
The singer is a better performer than she is a vocalist. Christina interacts with the band and works the stage with confidence. She’s a talented entertainer. But her vocals are generic and limited as far as her range and delivery are concerned.
Reba calls the performance wonderful, “You knocked it out of the park.” Snoop says, “It felt like Reba reincarnated.” He also complimented her showmanship.
Carson introduces Sting, who takes the stage. He’s promoting his new single, “I Wrote Your Name Upon My Heart.” He’ll be playing bass for all of tonight’s duets! He’ll be back for next week’s finale to collaborate with Snoop Dogg.
Jan Dan – Team Gwen – Open Arms by Journey
His daughter, who came into the world during an earlier round, is now 3 months old. Jan likes the song pick. It reminds him of reconciling with his birth father. Gwen suggests that he not shorten the notes. She loves his tone.
I’m not in love with this schlocky song choice. But his thing so far has been choosing songs outside of R&B and lending them a soulful sound. At least a big power ballad will allow him to show off his voice. However, he’s not a powerful singer, but he does bring emotion to the stage. He adds a few nice adlibs that lends character to his interpretation.
Michael says, “You make your family so proud. Great song choice. You made that yours.” Gwen compliments his composure. “Every single note was perfect.”
Jeremy Beloate and Sofronio Vasquez – Every Breath You Take
Sofrino compliments Jeremy’s falsetto while Jeremy admires Sofronio’s ability to hit all the high notes. Sting takes center stage with his bass as the singers flank him on either side. The two singers have the biggest voices of the Top 8, so a good match up.
Adam Bohanan – Team Reba – What’s Going On by Marvin Gaye
The singer explains that growing up, he had a hard time fitting in as a black Jew, and also mentions the social significance of the song. He mentions that he performs the song all the time and is constantly changing up the way he sings it.
The backing band is so tasty! Adam’s phrasing is always on point. He doesn’t possess a huge range, but he knows how to make the most of his vocal gifts. He soulfully embodies every song he performs, including here. It’s notable that he makes the song entirely his own.
Gwen reminds the audience he was a one chair turn. “You’re so smooth and relaxed…and completely in control. It was a journey.” Snoop says, “You suited and booted…you sounded good.” Reba calls Adam “infectious.”
Christina Eagle and Danny Joseph – If You Love Somebody Set them Free
Christina worked with Sting in the Knockouts and Danny is jealous. This time, Sting hangs back with the band while the singers begin the performance across the stage from each other before coming together while Sting steps out. Danny brings Sting energy to the performance while Christina lends a country sound. Danny embodies the spirit of the original, however.
Sydney Sterlace – Team Gwen – when the party’s over by Billie Eilish
The 16 year old brought her mom to rehearsal with Gwen. She only had a birthday recently. She possesses a ton of potential, but isn’t there yet. Gwen gives her a few tips on how to carry herself on stage.
Sydney doesn’t sing powerfully. Her superpower will be her ability to style a song. But it’s a thing she’s still working on. Having said that, this performance is easily her best so far. It’s been a few months since the Playoffs were filmed, and it seems as if the young singer has put in the work since then.
Snoop is speechless, almost, “You make me shed a tear when you do things like that. You have grown so much on the show.” Michael says, “You are just so settled in yourself. You made it yours.” Gwen says, “I’m blown away. You make us all feel something. That’s what’s special about you.”
Shye – Team Buble – The Joke by Brandi Carlile
The 18 year old singer brings her sister as her guardian (guess she hadn’t quite turned 18 yet). Shye explains that that her older sister showed her the ropes. Michael askes the band to drop out to allow Shye to end the song a’cappella.
Shye’s tone is deep and beautiful. She can sing the low and high notes without losing that full sound. Additionally, she’s able to tell a rich emotional story that’s well beyond her young years. It’s a perfect song choice for her. Fantastic performance. (The band did NOT cut out at the end. Hm.)
Gwen says, “I see the record now. I see what you will become.” She calls Shye “identifiable.” Reba calls her voice “round…full…crisp.” adding “You mesmerise me.” Michael adds her to the pantheon of great singers like Adele. “You are the real deal.”
Adam Bohanan and Jan Dan – Roxanne
The singers explain that the two are friends. What’s great about these two vocalists is that no matter what they sing, they are able to put their own specific spin on it. They are the opposite of karaoke. Both are rising to the moment. It’s the best duet so far.
Jeremy Beloate – Team Snoop – I (Who Have Nothing) by Tom Jones
Hm. This song choice is a wee bit old-fashioned. The singer chose it himself. He shares about attending over 100 auditions, for naught. And then The Voice happened. Snoop suggests that he start the performance quietly to allow more room to build.
I’m still not feeling this song choice. But Jeremy is lending all the drama and theatricality to the performance. He’s pacing the song expertly alongside fierce looks. What a stare! He ends on an unexpected falsetto note and then a huge finish.
Snoop is losing his mind. Gwen says, “You’re just rare. It’s almost like you’re too good to sing songs. You have an identity.” Adam mentions that Tom is a coach on the UK Voice. Snoop BEGS America to vote for Jeremy. The first coach to do so on behalf of a team member tonight.
Shye and Sydney Sterlace – Fields of Gold
Shye remarks that the two are the youngest singers in the Top 8. They possess disparate styles. Sydney’s voice is high and airy, while Shye performs with a full, deep alto. Shye is the more mature singer of the two, but Sydney is holding up. Nice harmonies. Both are too young to identify with the song, however.
Snoop’s daughter pimps her new reality show. Snoop and her mother produced the show. He is proud of his “baby girl.” In it, she plans her wedding. It’s called Snoop Dogg’s Fatherhood: Cori and Wayne’s Story.
Danny Joseph – Team Reba – I Was Wrong by Chris Stapleton
The singer performs 4 or 5 shows a week. He chose the song to reveal his tender side. Reba suggests he not overdo the runs. Oh. He’s from the UK but his parents emigrated there from Iran. He sang in the Iranian church growing up. He’s hoping his parents can attend the finale if he makes it.
His prolific stage career shows in the ease in which he performs on stage. His guitar playing should propel him to the final on its own. But what’s more, he sings with a swampy, raspy urgency that draws the audience in. He better make the finals. This might be his best performance so far on The Voice. Every note is perfect.
Gwen calls him “very cool. You’re weird. It’s just the whole thing.” Reba loved the things he selected to play on the guitar.
Sofronio Vasquez – Team Buble – If I Can Dream by Elvis Presley
The singer from the Philippines now lives in Utica New York. He performed the National Anthem for the first time recently at a Hockey game. He is performing the song for his mom as a way to say thank you.
It’s another old-fashioned song, and again, I don’t love it. But I’m probably in the minority. He’s going to sail into the finale with this song. The thing about Sofronio is that while he’s a belter, he brings unique twists to his phrasing that keep him from seeming schlocky. As I mentioned in my powerlist, his online videos are attracting millions of views. He could win.
Michael calls Sofronio strong, a man who has dealt with adversity. “I’m so happy for you.”
