Ari Camille vs Bryson Battle – Team Legend – Made for Me by Muni Long
NBC previewed this battle last week. Bryson was a 4-chair turn. Ari sang a song by Brandi. She recently graduated from theater school. Bryson is going into his final year at Berklee College of Music. He hopes to book a Broadway show. Coco suggested Ari find her breaths in the rhythm. John gave Bryson tips on not sounding too musical theater on the song.
Both artists are effortless R&B singers. And as trained actors, they know how to work the stage. It will be a difficult decision for John. Although according to the preview, a coach will likely steal the loser of the battle.
Adam wanted Bryson on his team. He has praise for Ari as well. But he leans toward Bryson. Kelsea notes they didn’t try to outsing each other. She mentions the importance of collaboration. Michael turned his seat for Ari. He calls her flawless. He refuses to choose. John sees star potential in Ari. John believes both are “immensely talented.” But he believes Bryson could win The Voice. John picks Bryson. Adam and Kelsea STEAL Ari and says all the right things. Yet Ari picks Team Adam!
Hayden Grove vs Lucia Flores-Wiseman – Team Adam – My Funny Valentine
Lucia sang in Spanish for her Blind Audition. Hayden’s musical background is jazz. Michael didn’t turn for him, but sang with him on stage, like a consolation prize. Adam believes both singers have a jazzy background. Hayden works as a sports reporter. As it turns out, Lucia is a big jazz fan and the song choice isn’t really out of her wheelhouse at all. Adam and Kate don’t really have notes for either!
Both singers are stylistic in ways that are distracting. Hayden sings with a bellow-y tone, while Lucia’s style is studied and mannered. Neither performance feels comfortable or natural. The duet has its moments, particularly when the singers harmonize.
Kelsea can hear the work he’s put in. She calls Lucia’s voice “lived in.” Michael gushes over the songbook. “Both of you told it tonight.” He compares Lucia to Lady Gaga. He’d pick her. John notes their hard work. Adam believes they both share being an old soul. Adam picks Lucia. Hayden is eliminated.
Grace Miller Moody vs Tori Templet – Team Adam – Use Somebody by Kings of Leon
Nine battles are scheduled for tonight, which means MONTAGES! After a short clip of the battle, Adam picks Grace Miller Moody, Tori Templet is eliminated.
Alanna Lynise vs Brook Wood – Team Kelsea – Angels Like You by Miley Cyrus
The two singers are happy Kelsea paired them together. Alanna was Kelsea’s last team member. She’s currently living off of her savings. Brook’s grandmother recently passed away. “Feel that lyric,” Kelsea advises.
It’s obvious the two are friends, the way they connect on stage. Brook’s style is more compatible with country singer Kelsea. I have a feeling she’ll pick her. Her voice is piercing and unforgettable. But don’t sleep on the soulful Alanna. She’s more than holding her own.
Michael calls them “cute” together. But feels Brook won the battle. John wants to hear Alanna on a record but noted pitchy moments. He prefers Alanna’s tone, but felt Brook had a better performance. Adam is torn. Kelsea mentions the nuance in Alanna’s voice. She believes Brook will be an artist no matter what. Kelsea picks Alanna! OK. That’s shocking. Brook is eliminated. Adam tells Kelsea he would have made the same choice.
Barry Jean Fontenot vs Kaiya Hamilton – Team Bublé – Cry to Me by Solomon Burke
Barry was a one chair turn and works as a substitute teacher. And he loves swords. Cynthia coaches Barry on how to stretch his chest voice. She suggests Kaiya engage her core and use her “full belt.” Right now, Kaiya shares that it’s difficult to be away from her three daughters.
Barry sang “I Wish it Would Rain” by the Temptations for his Blind Audition. He’s in his element here, He hearkens back to another era perfectly. But Kaiya can’t be denied here. However, Barry is such a force, he can’t help but dominate.
John compliments Barry’s range. He loves Kaiya’s tone. “It lit up the stage.” He’d pick her. Adam calls Barry warm. Adam can’t believe only two singers turned for Kaiya. “Your soul comes through when you sing,” says Kelsea. She notes how Kaiya connects her voice to her body. Michael picks Kaiya. Michael saves Barry. Kelsea steals him Barry picks Michael Kelsea’s pitch for Barry boiled down to “you lack confidence and I can help you.” REALLY patronizing.
Kameron Jaso vs Nami Soleil – Team Bublé – You Make My Dreams Come True by Hall & Oates
Michael’s next match up is edited down to a montage. After calling both singers winners, Michael picks Kameron, Nami is eliminated.
Aaron Rizzo vs Carlos Santiago – Team Bublé – Gravity by John Mayer
Team Bublé’s third and final pairing of the night is ALSO a montaged performance. Michael loves that Carlos sings in Spanish and is so versatile. Michael picks Carlos, Aaron is eliminated.
Antonio Ramsey vs BD.ii – Team Legend – Just Friends by Musiq Soulchild
BD.ii father was a gospel singer, but for the longest time, he concentrated on sports, specifically basketball. Antonio is a professional singer and dancer. Coco suggests the two not adlib in the first chorus. Also, she warns them not to overthink the performance. She wants them to be “more engaged.” John coaches Antonio not to over-enunciate his consonants. Originally, Antonio got no chairs. John used his Replay Button to save him.
Antonio asking the audience to snap at the top of the song is kinda corny. BD has got a cooler vibe going. Coco’s advice not to over-think it was good advice. Don’t try so hard is more like it.
Kelsea blocked Adam from turning for BD during the Blinds. He’d pick him. Kelsea describes both singers as cool and steady. Michael loves Antonio’s lower notes, but feels BD has what it takes to win the show. John felt Antonio performed his best tonight. However, he praise BD’s natural charisma. John picks BD.ii, Antonio is eliminated
Hailey Wright vs Jalen Johnston – Team Kelsea – Neon Moon by Brooks and Dunn
Hailey is a retro country singer, while Jalen sings contemporary country music. At only 19 years old, Hailey hasn’t performed many duets. Her mom is battling blood cancer. Jalen worries about hitting high notes. The rehearsal ends with Hailey, Jalen, Kelsea and Little Big Town singing together.
Jalen is off to a shaky start, struggling with the low notes which leads to tuning issues. Hailey is more comfortable with the song. However, Jalen finds his footing around the second verse. His tone is pleasantly raspy and soulful. Hailey’s twang, however, cuts through. I smell a save.
Michael calls both singers “distinct.” He can’t pick a winner. John feels both artists have “so much character” in their voices. He would lean towards Jalen. Adam felt both singers did a fantastic job. Kelsea picks Jalen, but also saves Hailey.
When Kelsea talked about her save in a clip before the Battle, I figured she’d use it to keep two country singers. Her decision to keep Jalen and Hailey may have also figured into eliminating a third country singer, Brook, from her team.
