This season, each coach will work with a celebrity advisor. Team Legend partners with Coco Jones. Team Adam enlists Kate Hudson. Team Bublé works with Cynthia Erivo and Team Kelsea joins forces with Little Big Town.

Simone Marijic vs Iris Herrera – Team Kelsea – Ceilings by Lizzie McAlpine

NBC dropped an early audition video last week. Simone sings in an acapella group at her college. She wants to prove she can be a solo artist. Kelsea describes Iris as a belter. She grew up in a small town. Iris didn’t get a chair turn the first time she auditioned with a Stevie Nicks song. She came back with an Alt Country vibe and won the coaches over.

Simone sings with a feathery soft voice. Her tone is gorgeous. But in this battle she’s up against a bigger voiced singer–the raspy Iris. She’s holding her own by the strength of a compelling tone.

Michael felt both artists sang beautifully. He won’t pick a winner. John agrees with Michael. Adam regrets not turning for either artist. He’d go with Iris, but felt both were great. Kelsea calls both singers “bold and brave.” Kelsea picks Iris, Michael STEALS Simone. EXACTLY what I thought was going to happen!

Divighn vs Dimitrius Graham – Team Bublé – Leave the Door Open by Silk Sonic

Dimitrius met Cynthia Erivo some time ago. She helped him accept his sexuality (Dimitrius is a former American Idol contestant). Divighn met his wife in high school and he gigs every weekend in Los Angeles. Michael suggests the two simplify the arrangement. “Seduce people,” Cynthia suggests.

Divighn works the stage expertly as a dancer and is the total package. But both singers can belt their faces off. They have great ranges. However, the two sang together more often than not. More solos would have shown off their voices better.

John felt unsteady pitch moments. He calls Divighn more polished as a physical performer, so he’d chose him. Adam believes it’s a dead heat between both singers. Kelsea remarks that both singers have voices that can do everything and feels they oversang at times. Michael calls the battle slick. Michael picks Divighn. Dimitrius is eliminated.

Trevon Dawson vs Tyler Kae – Team Adam – I’m with You by Avril Lavigne

Adam picked Trevon as his last team member. The rest of the teams were full. He blocked Kelsea from choosing Tyler. The two were not expecting to be paired. Well, Adam had to pair his country artist with someone. Tyler struggled with depression and anxiety. Trevon’s dad is also a singer and a musician. Adam advises Trevon to treat the song as if it were country. Kate stresses the importance of keeping the essence of the original when covering a song. The rehearsal clip ends with the two singers admitting they need a ton of rehearsal before they take the stage.

This song is WAY out of Trevon’s wheelhouse, but he’s holding his own, especially on the chorus. Tyler has pitchy moments but is more in her element. After a slow start, the duet comes together. For Adam, the decision will likely come down to weather he wants to keep his only country artist on his team or not.

Kelsea is impressed how Trevon showed up. She compares Tyler’s voice to American Idol alum Lauren Alaina. But she’d pick Trevon. Michael calls Adam the new King of Country (jokingly). He appreciates Tyler’s round tone and calls Trevon’s voice “sweet.” He’d pick Trevon for his potential as an artist. John would pick Tyler. Adam thanks both singers for trusting him. Adam picks Trevon, Tyler is eliminated. Yeah. Adam wasn’t letting go of the country singer. The Blake narrative the show built around this pick is tough to let go.

Jay Ammo vs Renzo – Team Legend – Is This Love by Bob Marley and The Wailers

Jay is from Guyana and auditioned with an Ed Sheeran song but he loves Caribbean music. Renzo, from Philly, has three kids. His daughter loves this song. John gives Renzo tips on blending with another singer. Coco feels Jay stays in his head as he performs.

The two singers’ styles are similar. Renzo has more striking stage presence and a more urgent delivery. Can’t deny the growl in his voice. It’s hard to look away from him.

Adam is mad that John blocked him from Renzo. “You are amazing.” Kelsea adores Jay’s voice. But she’d pick Renzo because he has “that thing.” Michael appreciates the choices Renzo made with the song. John loves Jay’s tone. But feels Renzo’s melodic choices were creative. John picks Renzo, Jay is eliminated.

Adam David vs Ricardo Moreno – Team Buble – Home by Michael Bublé

Adam was a one chair turn. Ricardo is an old-fashioned bilingual singer, and was Michael’s “Team Replay.” Michael jokes that he picked a song by one of the greatest songwriters in the world. Har har. Blake Shelton covered it later. Michael asks the two not to use runs when they sing together. Ricardo comes from a long line of Mariachi singers. Cynthia and Michael decide Ricardo should sing in Spanish. Adam mentions that he has been in recovery for over 5 years. Michael gives him permission to do his thing with the song.

A duet where the singers perform in different languages is like two artists on stage singing solos at the same time. The two never come together. Adam’s phrasing has subtle flourishes that make him a compelling singer. I’d choose him. But Michael may want a Spanish singer on his team.

John can’t pick a winner. Adam felt the song didn’t come together until the end (I agree). Kelsea appreciates Adam’s vibrato (I agree!). Although she doesn’t speak Spanish, Kelsea still felt Ricardo’s performance. Michael felt honored by the performance of his own song. Michael picks Adam, Ricardo is eliminated. The correct choice.

Jacquelyn George vs Jordan Allen – Team Legend – Islands in the Stream by Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers

The little bit of this montaged performance that aired sounds screechy. John picks Jacquelyn, explaining that her voice is the most dynamic of the two. John picks Jacquelyn, Jordan is eliminated

Jessica Manalo vs Dan Kieran – Team Kelsea – Good Luck Babe by Chappell Roan

Another montaged battle. Kelsea loves Dan’s dynamic voice, so she chooses him. Kelsea picks Dan, Jessica is eliminated

Paige Mackenzie vs Robert Hunter – Team Kelsea – Lies, Lies, Lies by Morgan Wallen

No more full battles for Team Kelsea as this third montaged battle is also from her. She picks Paige because of her consistency and control. Kelsea picks Paige, Robert is eliminated.

Tinika Wyatt vs Conor James – Team Adam – How Deep is Your Love by Bee Gees

Obviously, Kelsea will steal the loser of this battle. Tinika was Adam’s Coach Replay. Conor was a 4 chair turn. No chair vs 4 chairs. Tinka is 50 and has been around the music business for a long time. Adam feels the performance is at 80 percent and the singers just need to tweak it. Conor is familiar with the song and sings it at all of his gigs. He lived with his parents and grandparents in Bridgewater, MA (An interview with Conor will air on the local NBC affiliate news tonight)

Conor is very good. But Tinika is a master vocalist. He doesn’t stand a chance against her tone and creative runs and phrasing. Having said that, Conor and his lovely blue eyed soul brings artistry to the stage. He deserves to be stolen.

Kelsea calls it her favorite battle of the day.”You two sing from joy.” Michael compliments Conor’s voice and runs. He can’t choose. John is so glad Tinika is here. But he would pick Conor. How did she get no turns? Probably because the coaches sensed she was older. Adam believes Conor could go all the way. Adam picks Conor, Kelsea steals Tinika

Next Monday, the Knockouts begin.
