The Voice 27 Blind Audition: Jessica Manalo re-imagines Unholy by Sam Smith, Team Buble and Kelsea fight for her.
The Voice 27 moves on to week 3 of the Blind Auditions, featuring Jessica Manalo, who accompanies herself on guitar for an intriguing rendition of “Unholy” by Sam Smith.
At the chorus, Michael Buble hit his button. Kelsea Ballerini turned next. John Legend rocked in his chair but stayed put. Adam Levine also didn’t turn his chair.
After the performance, John asked the 31 year old singer from Las Vegas, Nevada if she arranged her version of the song, declaring it a “cool” idea. He called her vocal performance strong and original, but offered no explanation about hy he didn’t turn his chair (maybe he did explain, but the editors cut it out). Adam felt that she had to find her bearings in the beginning, but her vocals got stronger later in the performance–especially in her higher register. Adam looked forward to the “claws coming out” as Michael and Kelsea fought for her.
“Women are killing it in music right now, specifically woman who have these really identifiable voices and styles”
Kelsea loves the original version of song, and it took a minute for her to realize that Jessica “re-imagined” it. She added, “Women are killing it in music right now, specifically woman who have these really identifiable voices and styles. That’s what you have.” Kelsea promised to “champion” the singer in whatever way she needed.
Jokingly, Michael pointed out that he’s older and more experienced than Kelsea, before adding, “My favorite part about you–your playing and singing–it’s so percussive.” He can imagine the perfect tunes for her. He attempted to bribe her with his team gift, a jacket, as he warbled the Canadian anthem.
While Michael pulled out the gimmicks, Kelsea offered the best pitch. Which team will Jessica choose? Team Buble or Team Kelsea? Tune into The Voice Monday February 17 at 8 pm ET/PT on NBC and streaming next day on Peacock to find out.
