The Voice Blind Audition: Deion Warren’s ‘Shallow’ Impresses (Video)

The Voice 20 Blind Auditions Deion Warren Sings Lady Gaga's Shallow

Deion Warren performs “Shallow” by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper for his The Voice Season 20 Blind Audition. When it becomes clear the singer is taking some interesting liberties with the melody, coaches Kelly Clarkson and John Legend hit their buttons right away.

It’s rare for men to cover “Shallow” as a solo artist, so Deion is walking out on a limb. But his soulful version is notable for not only its creative phrasing, but also his smooth yet emotional delivery. At the height of the third chorus, Nick Jonas slams his button.

“You bettah sing!” Kelly shouts afterward. Blake Shelton calls himself a moron for not turning for the 28 year old singer from Conway, North Carolina. Blake says he didn’t turn because of an earlier promise he made to Cam Anthony, that if the artist chose Team Blake, he’d keep his R&B lane open for him.

But Blake clearly has a favorite: “You have three incredible coaches to choose Nick from!” Deion describes himself as “born, raised and dipped in batter in the church.” To which Nick pipes up, “Me too!” Nick promises he could take Deion all the way to the finale. That’s a big promise!

John feels that Deion demonstrated artistry in choosing a song outside of his genre and making it his own. He also loved his low voice, calling it “rich and nuanced.” He added, “You don’t need a lot of coaching from us.”

Kelly believes Deion is the perfect vessel for the song at this time, as he focused on the song’s intent rather than merely showing off his range. “That is my favorite kind of singer,” she says, adding. “Pick someone who has won a vocal competition!”

Who will Deion choose? Fans will have to tune in tonight (March 9) at 9 pm ET/PT to find out.
