The Voice 20 Blind Audition: Ryleigh Modig – Nick Jonas Has No Chance to Win Over This One
During Monday’s (March 8) The Voice 20 Blind Audition episode, Ryleigh Modig, an 18-year-old singer from Spencer, Mass., hits the low notes in Billie Eilish’s hit song “When The Party’s Over” just beautifully. She displays control over her voice, with a vibrato that expresses emotion in a pure and passionate way. And then she hits a run that gave me slight shades of last season’s Indie pop girl Julia Cooper.
Right when she hits the run, coach Kelly Clarkson instantly turns. The build didn’t quite do it for me. It was emotional, but I expected her to hit a bigger note. However, the build did impress Nick Jonas enough to get him to hit his button. I think had she hit a bigger note, she would be considered a frontrunner and would have been a 3 chair or 4 chair turn. She’s for sure got dark-horse potential, but it is going to take a bigger moment for an indie pop girl to go far.
In her package, she explains that she is different, and at one point she shaved her head. Her parents are very supportive of her, which she really appreciates. Music has also allowed for her to cope and come to terms with being gay. Ryleigh auditioned for Season 19 of The Voice, but she did not make the top 40 and her audition did not air.
Kelly yells “you better sing those runs” as soon as she is done. Nick notes that she has the “kind of tone and voice” that speaks to his “soul.” And Kelly is like “I can’t do that!” And then Ryleigh exclaims “Kelly, I’m gay!”. It’s a moment that The Voice has teased for a while. Kelly, who now realizes she has a good chance, says, “none of that works!” John Legend notes the power of her vibrato.
I don’t think Nick took a good approach. He tried to say he can coach nerves, but this just leads to Kelly capitalizing off of it, saying that she saw it as emotion not nerves. Kelly thinks Ryleigh should have been a 4-chair turn. It seems as if Blake Shelton wants her to choose Nick. Kelly says she “specializes in winning”. Ryleigh ultimately chooses the winner with Kelly.

Personally, I think she has grown a lot since her performances from about a year and a half ago. She has developed some more power in her vocal and really tapped into her vibrato.
