The Voice can’t stop talking about American Idol. But without naming any names of course.

One of NBC biggest scores was luring American Idol OG winner Kelly Clarkson to the network where she sits on The Voice coaching panel and hosts a talk show. STILL, she mentions, frequently (At least TWICE on Tuesday night!) that she WON a singing show. It’s her ace in the pocket to lure artists on to her team.

Not only did she mention the winning-a-singing competition Tuesday night, but fellow coach Blake Shelton jumped in to tease her. The Voice featured 30 entire seconds of the coaches talking about their biggest competition. Interesting!.

“I’m having a great season because no matter what she does, Kelly Clarkson cannot complete her team!” boasted Blake. “She’s got a team of great people, but terrible coach.”

“Nope,” says Kelly, “That’s a lie…”

Host Carson Daly then jumped into the conversation, “She’s won a show just like this. Arguably she knows more about this than any of you!”

Blake shot back, “That show was cancelled.”

Well, technically yes. FOX canceled it, but then a year later ABC rebooted it. And when American Idol came back to television after resting in 2017, the ratings ended up on par with The Voice.

In the early days, The Voice killed the aging American Idol in the ratings. For instance, in 2015, the American Idol season 14 finale earned a 1.7 rating in the key 18-49 demo with 8 million overall viewers, while The Voice season 8 finale garnered a 2.9 rating and 11.6 million viewers.

Needless to say, the following season was Idol’s last on the FOX network.

These days, both shows are running about neck and neck in the ratings, hovering around about 1.0 in the key demo. Network ratings aren’t what they used to be, across the board, actually.
