The Voice Comeback Stage Battle: Ayanna Joni vs Madison Cain (VIDEO)

The competition phase of The Voice digital series The Comeback Stage begins. Fifth coach, country star Kelsea Ballerini chose six singers from the Blind Auditions who just missed getting a chair turn to compete for a spot in the live shows.

And they are: Ayanna Joni, 29 years old single mom from Yonkers NY (Episode 1), 20 year old Ele Ivory from Nashville (Episode 2), 18 year old Lynnea Moore from California. Interesting vocalist–she sang the wrong song(Episode 3), 22 year old Wyatt Rivers from North Carolina. On stage, he had pitch problems. (Episode 4), Folk singer Sam Robbins didn’t show off the range of his voice (Episode 5) and 24 year old Madison Cain. She’s the daughter of a member of the iconic band Journey (Episode 6).

In the Comeback Stage Battles, the singers will be paired up to perform songs in the studio that they first rehearse with Kelsea. After the performances, she’ll choose one singer to advance on to the Knockouts. Two singers will perform in the live Playoffs for votes. One singer will advance to the Top 13.

First Battle is Ayanna Joni vs Madison Cain. Ayanna performs Ariana Grande’s “Dangerous Woman” while Madison sings Lady Gaga’s “You and I.”

Kelse describes both vocalists as “powerhouse” singers that needed to perform with a little more “umption.” (NOT A WORD! Heh).  After one last rehearsal, the two perform for Kelsea. She suggests that Ayanna bring more attitude. Kelsea loves her runs. For Madison, Kelsea compliments her range and feels that she finally brings the emotion.

Both singers outperformed their Blind Auditions. The intimate setting certainly helps. However, I think Madison’s vocal was stronger. And DANG THAT RANGE. She goes off key in the last performance (she talks about having stage fright), but it’s a winner. However….

Ayanna wins the round. Madison is eliminated. Kelsea calls their voices “bold and expressive” and Madison’s performance of “You and I” dynamic. But, she tells Ayanna, “The way that your voice sounds recorded, is like a pop record.”  Believing Ayanna had a radio ready voice is probably why Kelsea chose her. I guess?
