Morgan Myles Gaga Cover “Always Remember Us This Way” tearful tribute to late cousin
Wow, we are already at the Semifinals of Season 22 of The Voice! The time is flying by. The singers took on solo numbers Monday night, as well as Whitney Houston tribute duets inspired by a private viewing of the new Whitney biopic movie, I Wanna Dance with Somebody. (Read our Recap)
The night’s song choices were hit-and-miss, but one of the standout moments was an emotional powerhouse performance from Team Camila Cabello’s Nashville singer Morgan Myles‘ Gaga cover, “Always Remember Us This Way.” Her audition opened the season and now she got the opportunity to close the most important night, the one that determines who makes the finale.
Morgan Myles Gaga Tribute “Remembers” Her Cousin Mac with
In the video package, Morgan shared a moment with Camila’s mom who keeps blowing up the family chat. Morgan explained to Camila that she is dedicating Lady Gaga’s “Always Remember Us This Way” to her late cousin. The singer was extremely close to the 33 year old who her family lost to glioblastoma (brain cancer). The disease also took her grandfather.
After her cousin’s death, Morgan wrote a faith-inspired original song
This loss has inspired some of Morgan’s released original work too. Morgan wrote an original titled “I Believe” that was released in 2020 that was about losing her cousin Mac. The Youtube music video caption reads: “This faith inspired, soulful gospel style song comes from Myles’ spiritual background of what gets her through her most challenging times in life”. The song is beautiful and showcases Morgan’s storyteller abilities.”
Morgan is singing this song to recall all the memories she had with her beloved cousin, noting that the song is about “choosing to remember the good times.” Her story really hit home for me as I too have lost loved ones to cancer, and it is heartbreaking. Camila suggests that Morgan bring her “soulfulness” and her unique “grit and rasp” to the special tribute. Adding to the night’s emotional tone–the singer’s parents drove 2,000 miles to be there to support and cheer her on.
This song is my favorite song from the remake of A Star Is Born which is one of the biggest movie soundtracks of the 2010s. It is a tall number as Gaga’s head voice truly shines on the “oohs”. Its mix of rock, pop, and country makes it a perfect fit for Morgan’s beautiful head voice and her rock-tinged rasp.
At the piano for the first time this season
Morgan performed at the piano for the first time in the competition. Her enunciation and phrasing were technically amazing as every word had purpose. The string accompaniment made this version magical. Even if not vocal perfection, the soul Morgan brought from her heart was so touching and full of emotion. Her rasp shined more than ever. Her head voice and ending were remarkable as she finished the song in tears. Morgan has been great throughout, but she is peaking at the right moment. If this is going by vocals alone, Morgan should be in the running to win this whole thing.
Morgan receives a standing ovation
All four coaches stand as the audience applauds. Morgan’s family were emotional and looked so proud of her! Gwen Stefani called the performance and her tone “beautiful” and said it is “shocking” to see someone as professional as Morgan hone it in and grow. Camila believes Morgan could be the next “superstar” and feels that Morgan is “The Voice” as her vocal has “truth and grit.”
The standouts of the night were clearly Morgan and Team John Legend singer Kim Cruse’s jazzy vocal masterclass on the classic “Summertime.” These two have become the most consistent performers in the live shows, even if Kim had to win the Instant save to make the semifinals last week. Honorable mentions go to Parijita Bastola and Kim’s duet performance of “I’m Every Woman.” Also, Team Blake Shelton’s Bryce Leatherwood’s religious Justin Moore country cover was one of his best performances of the season. The Whitney duets were kind of a mess which was expected because very few can take on Whitney, who has one of the greatest voices of all time.
I feel confident that Morgan and Bryce will be in next week’s finale. My guess is Bodie will be there too based on body of work. But other than that it is tough to see who will join them.
