America’s Got Talent 2021 Audition: Brooke Simpson is back in the Spotlight with a powerful Lizzo cover
Brooke wants to be the first indigenous pop star
Brooke is a member of the Haliwa-Saponi tribe, and is 100% native American. She shared about her Native background on The Voice. And in her pre-package video, the singer expresses her love for where she came from. She aims to be is a voice for indigenous people, stating in her package that they are “often erased from the conversation.” She wants to kill it for her people. When asked about her dreams by the judges, Brooke states that singing in front of Simon Cowell has always been a dream of hers and that she wants to be the “first major indigenous popstar.”
Lizzo wows the judges with her cover of Lizzo’s “Cuz I Love You”
Her husband, Ray, accompanied her on her showstopping Lizzo cover of “Cuz I Love You.” Lizzo is no easy task as her songs need control, power, and the ability to do the rap parts. But Brooke made it look easy. It wasn’t the absolute best song she could have chosen, but singing big belty notes are what make Brooke stand out. She poured her heart and soul into the song, delivering one of the most seasoned vocal performances so far this season. It almost seemed as if Brooke was “too good” to be on the show. She did place 3rd and receive a 4-chair turn on The Voice, after all.
The judges gave Brooke a standing ovation and host Terry Crews exclaimed, “absolutely incredible” after the performance. Judge Sofia Vergara said, “I think you have to figure out a way how to do this for the rest of your life.” Howie Mandel predicted that she would be playing bigger venues after this. Heidi Klum said that she has “the full package to be a star.” Brooke’s stellar vocals had Simon comparing her to Idol greats such as former contestants Kelly Clarkson, and Fantasia. He said that she has an “amazing voice and personality.”
Simon jokingly said no, before the judges gave Brooke 4 yeses.
