American Idol Celebrates Mandisa as three former contestants return on Monday (April 29) to pay tribute
Monday night (April 29) American Idol will pay tribute to season 5 alum Mandisa, who died last week of undisclosed causes.
The performance will take place during the Judges Song Contest episode, Billboard reports. Friends returning to honor the Grammy winning Christian singer include Melinda Doolittle (S6), Danny Gokey (S8) and Colton Dixon (S11). The trio will join forces to sing “Shackles” by gospel duo Mary Mary.
“Mandisa was an adored icon on American Idol and in the music industry,” American Idol shared on social media. “She had become a platinum-selling artist and had won several Grammys for her music. Her passing has left everyone on the show heartbroken, and we extend our deepest condolences to her family.”
A memorial service for Mandisa took place on Saturday (April 27)
A memorial service was held for Mandisa on Saturday (April 27) at the Brentwood Baptist church in Brentwood, Tennessee. Melinda Doolittle attended and shared about the moving service on social media. “Mandisa, look at your literal CHOIR of friends!,” Melinda wrote. “We love you, and love the fact that you always pointed us to our true source of strength…Jesus.”
A California native, Mandisa released her debut album True Beauty after competing on the show. Her 2013 release, Overcomer, was a career defining album, winning the Grammy for Best Contemporary Christian Music album in 2014. The lead single, “Overcomer” became an anthem for those fighting to get past life’s obstacles. She performed the song on Good Morning America. Mandisa’s Christian radio hits also include “Stronger,” “Good Morning (feat. TobyMac)” and “My Deliverer.”
She made her mark on American Idol after standing up to judge Simon Cowell after he snarkily criticized her weight behind her back. She humbled him, which doesn’t happen often.
“”Yes you hurt me, and I cried,” she said during the Top 24 final judgement.” she told the judge during the Top 24 final judgement where she was put through to the next round. “And it was painful, it really was. But I want you to know that I’ve forgiven you and you don’t need someone to apologize in order to forgive somebody.”
