Tori Kelly never imagined she’d play an elephant, she told Jenna Hager Bush on the Today show this morning. But, she added, “I’ve always wanted to do voice acting so this was like a dream come true for me.”
The American Idol singer dropped by the NBC morning show to promote her new movie Sing, in which she voices a shy teenaged elephant with a big big voice. The animated film, which depicts a singing competition between talented animals, is sort of a cross between Glee and American Idol.
Tori felt a kinship with the bashful elephant, Meena. “I grew up being really really shy, and I always knew I liked to sing,” she said. “I would get up there on stage and be really stiff and not know what to do. It took time for me to really grow out of that and realize that this is what I love to do.”
Tori performed a song from the soundtrack and the movie, an acoustic cover of Stevie Wonder’s “Don’t You Worry Bout a Thing.”
