Tonight, The Voice 5 winner will be crowned. Will it be Tessanne Chin, Will Champlin from Team Adam? Or will it be Jacquie Lee from Team Christina. We’re live blogging the results here! Plus Lady Gaga performs with Christina Aguilera! Paramore, Celine Dion, Ne-Yo and One Republic also perform.
The best season of The Voice yet has come to a close. I really loved the talent on this season, and was the most invested I’ve ever been watching the show. The best moments came early on, when the coaches were willing to take chances. Also, my favorites dropped out earlier than I wanted. Preston Pohl, James Wolpert and Matthew Schuler were favs I would have loved to go farther. But having said that, I’m perfectly happy with Tessanne winning the contest. She easily had the best pure voice of the Top 48. I’m not sure what they are going to do with her post show. Her most popular performances were older songs like “I Have Nothing” and “Redemption Song” She’s only in her 20s, but she SEEMS older. To be honest, I don’t think she’s going to be that winner who breaks out for The Voice. But she could have a very nice career.
Jacquie Lee still needs a few years to grow into that big voice of hers. And while Will Champlin fought hard and earned his place in the Top 3, unless he’s a fantastic songwriter, I can’t see him making waves either.
The last couple of weeks of competition was disappointing as the coaches, focused on winning, began to play it safe. But you can’t blame them, as worn out standards like “Bridge Over Troubled Waters” and “I Have Nothing” topped the charts.
The Voice Season 5 may be finished, but we get to do it ALL OVER AGAIN in two months, when The Voice 6 premieres on February 24. See you then!
Here we go! Of course, we have to begin the 2 hour final with a massive recap of last night’s show. Record breaking votes, says Carson. He claims it’s anyone’s to take.
The Top 20 take the stage to sing “Tonight’s The Night” by Outasite. The Top 3 start things off, but when the rest of the singers take the stage, it’s kind of a hot mess. I don’t remember half these people. For reals.
Cee Lo describes his crazy sparkly outfit as “Disco Balls” Dear God, is that a glitter onsie with a bow tie? That’s what it looks like. Christina’s hair is humongous tonight. Blake thinks he knows who is going to win. It’s down to the last 3. Hardy har har. He got gifts for the coaches.
Jacquie Lee brings back Matthew Schuler, James Wolpert, Caroline Pennell and Cole Vosbury to sing “Bohemian Rhapsody” (!!!). She feels their voices are complimentary. We’ll see. Caroline and Matthew are straining their voices. Jacquie doesn’t know her part. James misses his cue. Holding it together? Cole Vosbury. Seriously. This is pretty much a mess and a terrible choice for a group song. Hilariously terrible. “The coaches loved it!” chirps Carson. RIGHT.
Before the break, we see Tessanne backstage losing her shit when she finds out which superstar she’s duetting with.
Next a video package mocking Adam as the Sexiest Man Alive. Lots of shots of Adam doing very uncool and unsexy things.
Celine Dion joins Tessanne Chin to sing Celine’s “Love Can Move Mountains.” Oh. So that’s why Tessanne was so upset. Celine is her hero. They sound great. But way to position Tessanne as a fuddy-duddy old fashioned singer. Couldn’t they get someone a little hipper to duet with her?

A video package featuring FAN IMPRESSIONS of the coaches. Zzz. Oh look,
Ryan Tedder and One Republic is here to perform their song “I Live.” Oh, it’s another one of those propulsive folky sounding tunes. Tedder sure knows how to jump on the latest trends. I suppose that bodes well for the winner who will release a song written by him. Wow. Tedder’s singing is not good.

“We’re so close to revealing the winner of The Voice,” lies Carson Daly as he throws the show to commercial.
Winter Olympic hopefuls are sitting in the audience. The Winter Olympics begin February 6!!!
The next Video package features Cee Lo Green and his “Poetry for Life.” In other words, Cee Lo makes no sense, ever. I won’t miss him next season.
Ray Boudreaux, Preston Pohl, Matthew Schuler, Nic Hawk and Josh Logan sing “Treasure” by Bruno Mars and it does not suck. it’s actually really good. Very soulful. Ray, Preston and Josh are highlights.
Will Champlin brings back Jonny Gray, Cole Vosbury, Caroline Pennell and Austin Jenckes to sing “Wagon Wheel.” Caroline is way more comfortable here than she was on “Bohemian Rhapsody.” Her harmonies are off pitch. But everyone else sounds great. Jonny was really a talent unrealized. Austin sounds good too. It’s interesting that Will is fronting an Americana fest, because he’s not about that at all.
The three finalists parents are in the Skybox with Carson. Blah blah blah.
Next, it’s Christina’s Video package. I AM SO BORED. It’s only 10 pm. I’m going to cry. Oh. It’s Christina’s birthday today.
The band, Paramore join Jacquie Lee on stage to sing “Ain’t it Fun.” Jacquie’s wavy hairdo is really pretty. The band is REALLY loud. To drown out Jacquie, that has to be loud. Jacquie and Hayley Williams don’t so much sing together as run around the stage singing at the same time.

A bunch of contestants join forces to sing “My Life Would Suck Without You.” Basically, the Top 20 girls who didn’t make the live shows (and Kat Robichaud). And listening to them now, I understand why. This is pretty bad. The solos are mostly painful. They sing OK in unison, though! Again…blanking on a couple of these singers.
OH YAY (NOT) A VIP TOUR OF THE UNIVERSAL BACKLOT. SNACK BREAK! Oh wait, some annoying Universal grinch character just awarded The Top 3 a NEW CAR.
One last The Voice confessional. I’M GOING TO MISS THESE SO MUCH. NOPE.
Next, Celine Dion and Ne-Yo take the stage to sing their duet “Incredible.”

After the break, Carson interviews Ryan Tedder to chat about the song he wrote. He says it’s not your typical “coronation” type song. He’ll be working on The Voice 6 too. He’s basically the “in-house songwriter.”
Will Champlin and Aloe Blacc sing Avicii’s “Wake Me Up.” Dang. He didn’t even get a big star to perform with! Yes, this song is a huge hit, but Avicii, the producer, is the star, not the lead singer. The performance is all over the place. Will is missing notes and seems under-rehearsed. The two are a mismatched pair.

Tessanne Chin brings back James Wolpert, Preston Pohl, Olivia Henken and Grey for a performance of “Hold On, I’m Coming” by Sam and Dave. OK. This is pretty great. The best “Bring Back” performance of the night. Preston getting down! He was sooooo robbed. Even Olivia, whom I wasn’t a big fan of, sounds good here. GO JAMES!!!! I’m reminded of the people I liked who left too soon.
Now, it’s time for Blake Shelton’s video package. SO IMPATIENT FOR THE RESULTS.
Lady Gaga takes the stage to sing “Do What U Want”. No R. Kelly on stage molesting her. We get Christina instead. Which is kind of awesome! Ha. They sit on a glamorous chaise lounge to sing the bridge. They are kinda going there, to that sapphic place, but not exactly. I wish Christina had gone for it, to be honest. It would have been a water cooler moment. But now, it’s just a sorta cool but somewhat awkward performance. The collaboration was Lady Gaga’s suggestion. They had never met before. After gushing about how awesome Gaga is, Christina says, “I love you girl!” So smart of Gaga to show the world that she and Christina aren’t rivals. GIRL POWER.

FINALLY THE RESULTS. After the finalists thank their coach, it’s time for the big reveal
Third Place – Will Champlin
Second Place – Jacquie Lee
WINNER – TESSANNE CHIN!
Tessanne is in tears. She debuts the winners single. We don’t even get the entire song. Lame. It’s an OK song. I mean, it’s not “No Boundaries” horrible, but it’s not even close to a “Home”-like triumph. It’s got a big chorus, which enhances the big moment, and your typical dumb lyrics. NBC cuts off right on time. Too bad they didn’t run over to air her entire performance.
Tessanne, in tears, manages to sing with her happy family around her. I live for those winning moments on singing competitions!
