Oh dang. After reaching the finals and finishing The Masked Singer season 10 in 4th place, Macy Gray traveled across the pond to compete on the current season of The Masked Singer UK.
But things did not go as expected, and after leaving the show in 3rd place in week 2 on Saturday (Jan 11), Macy, dressed as the six foot Toad in a Hole, stormed off set instead of unmasking. What made her angry, probably, is that the judges panel picked another contestant (Bear) after a sing-off. According to The Daily Mail sources, Macy was left “totally blindsided” by the result.
Eventually, producers coaxed her back on stage, where she unmasked, but she had a ‘tude all through the interview with host Joel Dommett.
The Masked Singer earn the same no matter how far they go
He called Macy’s meltdown “the “funniest thing I’ve ever seen in my life.” Speaking to Paddy McGuinness on BBC Radio 2 on Sunday, Joel joked that he didn’t understand what upset Macy “because you get the same money and you don’t have to do anything else.”
Interesting that the show pays the contestants a flat fee no matter how far they go on The Masked Singer. I suspect The Masked Singer US uses the same pay structure for their contestants as well. I’ve said it before and I still believe it: Producers pick who stays and who moves on in the competition. There are no stakes. The “audience vote” seems like a sketchy thing, and in the end the panel “chooses” the winner.
Joel makes a good point: “The case with Macy is she is a legend,” he told the BBC. “She has a recognisable voice and she might as well go because we all know it is her, and they put the other person through because we still don’t know who they are.”
Exactly! There’s no mistaking that voice. When she competed on the US version, I had her figured out halfway through her first song! While US producers didn’t make the same calculation, UK producers probably figured, it’s better to hold on to a contestant who will keep the audience guessing.
Macy also refused to leave The Masked Singer Australia
Apparently she pulled something similar during her FIRST go at The Masked Singer, in Australia. Back in 2021 Macy refused to leave the Australian version of the show after the show eliminated her, according to the Daily Mail.
One of the show’s judges, Dave ‘Hughesy’ Hughes, said Macy, who was unmasked as Atlantis, “refused to leave” despite being told it was time to take off her mask and say goodbye. She only agreed to leave when producers informed her that “we can’t do the end of the show unless the head comes off.”
