American Idol 2012 winner Phillip Phillips sings ‘Dancing with Your Shadows’ on Today
It’s been five years since Phillip Phillips released a new album. Now, the American Idol season 11 winner is out promoting his new set, Drift Back.
The singer-songwriter visited the Today show on Thursday (July 20) as part of the NBC morning show’s summer Citi-music series. Performing “Dancing with Your Shadows,” Phillip shared that “You go through a lot when you have a kid. It changes all of your priorities, your responsibilities, everything.” He continued, sharing about his son, Patch, “He’s an awesome little boy–most days! This music, represents all these past five years. I’ve been through a lot of amazing things, and a lot of tough situations, but that’s life. I try to represent that through music.”

“My wife was struggling with sickness and still is,” Phillip explained earlier this year. “And I’ve had to watch her go through it and knowing I can’t fix it. I want to make things as perfect as I can for her, but me realizing I can’t is very tough for me. I came to realize I have to just be there for her. Sometimes not even saying anything. Just being there and go through it all with her.”
In a press statement, Phillip said that the album, Drift Back, “reflects the wins and losses I experienced…I have learned, loved, and lived. I am excited to drift back to what I’ve always loved with my fans and that is music. I am so proud of this album and how it puts my soul into song and brings you all into my life a little bit more, for better or for worse. Let’s drift back to the good stuff.”
Phillip’s official tour begins in October
