More about the American Idol 2021 schedule continues to be revealed. The schedule will feature Sunday and Monday episodes until the end of the season, airing two hours on each night.
Coming up: Showstopper/Final Judgement: 64 Singers Vie for 24 Spots
The upcoming two episodes airing Sunday March 28 and Monday March 29 are titled Showstopper/Final Judgement parts 1 & 2, according to an ABC press release.
The round seems similar to the Showcase episodes which took place in Hawaii in 2020 and 2019. However, because of Covid-19 restrictions, the performances won’t be in front of a huge live audience. However, the singers will perform in front of a band for the first time. Performances are followed by the judges making cuts “green mile” style. By the end of Monday’s episode, the Top 24 will be revealed (Or check out Top 24 Spoilers, but don’t spoil in the comments!).
The Showstoppers round marks the first time contestants will showcase their talent by performing with a band this season for their last chance to make it into the coveted Top 24.
American Idol twitter account reveals that 64 singers remain to vie for 24 spots.
All Star Duets & Solos
The following Sunday April 4 and Monday April 5 are All Star Duets and Solos, which should seem familiar. Just like 2020 and 2019, the semifinalists (Top 24 this season instead of a Top 20) will sing solos and also perform with special celebrity singers.
Contestants will showcase their talent by performing duets with surprise celebrity guests for a chance to make it to live shows.
Here’s a look at the upcoming schedule. The Top 16 perform on Sunday. And then on Monday April 12 American Idol will reveal the TOP 12 LIVE. (via Futon Critic) It’s not clear when voting begins. Considering the Top 12 will be revealed live, the Top 16 at least, will be a voting round.
- Sun Mar 28 – Showstopper/Final Judgement Pt 1
Monday Mar 29 – Showstopper/Final Judgement Pt 2 - Sun Apr 4 – All Star Duets and Solos
Mon Apr 5 – All Star Duets and Solos - Sunday Apr 11 – Top 16
Monday Apr 12 – Top 12 LIVE Reveal
WARNING! The schedule below IS SPECULATION BY NO MEANS A SPOILER!
If there is a Top 12 this season, and two hour shows on both Mondays and Tuesdays, could there be back to back performance shows with an elimination at the end of every episode?
Initially, I thought that the results show could make a comeback when the two night a week American Idol schedule was revealed. However Idol will air two hour shows on BOTH Sundays and Mondays. So how would a results show work? Maybe American Idol has devised some completely out-of-the-box format change.
But the thing is, my theory does fit the schedule.
What are your thoughts? What theories do you have regarding the American Idol format for the rest of season 19?
