How Cowell hijacked the Queen’s show: Media mogul’s acts accused of dominating line-up at Royal Variety Performance
Love him or hate him, Simon Cowell is a king among showbusiness promoters.
He takes few prisoners in his quest to dominate the world of entertainment, as the Royal Family was reminded this week.
The TV mogul was yesterday accused of hijacking Monday’s Royal Variety Performance centenary and turning it into an advert for his Britain’s Got Talent show.
The performance – before the Queen and Prince Philip at the Royal Albert Hall – featured a glut of artists signed to Cowell’s Syco Music label and large sections of the programme were dominated by BGT judges and acts.
As well as this year’s winners Ashleigh and Pudsey, space was given to the show’s other successes including Paul Potts, dance troupe Diversity and comedy duo Stavros Flatley.
Writing on Twitter, one observer noted: ‘The entire line up is in some way affiliated with Simon Cowell.’
The show itself – which attracts a global TV audience of 150million – was presented by BGT judge David Walliams.
He even invoked Cowell in a joke, cheekily comparing him to the monarch.
BGT judge Amanda Holden, 41, also presented a ‘tribute’ to the ITV talent show.
Other acts linked to Cowell included boy-band One Direction, who signed to Syco Records after finishing third in X Factor.

He explained:
“We did originally make it that the 22nd of every month is just one day where it’s kind of more acceptable for us to be stupid and we just kind of run away from everyone really.”

Move over Louis Tomlinson, there’s a new sasquatch in town – and he’s taking on The Wanted.
Yup, the rivalry between One Direction and The Wanted reached new levels today, after Zayn Malik embarked on a war of words with Max George on Twitter.
Now, we’re not entirely sure if this is all just ‘banter’ – or if the pair are actually glaring at their computer screens while sticking pins into little voodoo dolls of each other – but it’s STRESSING US THE FRICK OUT.
Can’t we just all have a big, naked, group hug together boys?
The twitter row/banter/whatever you want to call it seems to have been sparked by Zayn’s comment two days ago, when he called Max a ‘geek’ for cosying up to Usher.

Cowell’s new plan to keep X Factor a-live

He hopes the move – which is a big hit with US viewers – will lure back fans, who have branded the show a “fix” after favourite Ella Henderson got the boot on Sunday.
An insider said: “If the viewers knew popular acts like Ella and James Arthur were pulling in low numbers of votes it would encourage them to pick up the phone.
“Revealing the voting numbers each week has really brought a new dynamic to the US show.
“Simon is looking to introduce it in the UK next year as part of a major shake-up.”
At the moment UK X Factor only publishes the voting placings after each series is finished.
