More and more it looks like Sam Bailey and Nicholas McDonald are dead certs for next week’s final and Luke Friend and Rough Copy are fighting for the third spot. I would personally prefer if it was the other way around, though.
Luke Friend – Best Thing I Never Had (Beyonce)
Luke Friend will play his guitar and channel his inner diva.
So this is how Mumfold & Sons would cover Beyonce? This is pretty good.
Sharon: My darling little hairball. I’m not crazy about this song, however your performance was so much better than that song.
Gary: You were the very first contestant we saw this season. You grew so much, congratulations.
Nicole: For me it was a little bit too One Direction and Mumfold & Sons got together to do Beyonce …
Louis: I want you in the finals!
Nicholas McDonald – Halo (Beyonce)
In the VT we see the choreographer trying to make Nicholas look a little less cringeworthy on stage.
Tonight Nick rocks Louis Walsh’s signature hairdo. The re-arrangement of this song is really boring. Some vocal problems … Now he is crying. That might just work for him.
Sharon: Why are you crying? [He is so happy to be here!] It was a very emotional performance, it made your voice crack.
Gary: That just wasn’t like you … pitchy .. pick your confidence up and move forward.
Nicole: I saw the tiger come out in you! Stay focused!
Louis: It was a big song! Scotland is behind you!
Sam Bailey – If I Were A Boy (Beyonce)
The delivery is typical Sam. She is hitting all the notes, but I’m not sure she is connecting with the song. I still don’t see Sam as a recording artist after the show. She is damn good as a karaoke singer, but not much beyond that.
Gary: Good job, Sam.
Nicole: You took it back to your roots. Let go even more, because you have it in you!
Louis: Vocally off the charts!
Sharon: You chose the song tonight because I know how much you love it …
Rough Copy – Survivor (Destiny’s Child)
Rough Copy are covering Destiny’s Child. Hopefully they can bring some swag out on stage. I don’t want it to be vanilla.
Well, not that much sag, but it could be worse, I guess? Did every Beyonce cover tonight need guitars? The dancing is SOMETHING.
Nicole: The semifinal has finally begun! You guys bring excitement!
Louis: Every week you bring something! Everyone was brilliant!
Sharon: Now, okay, perfect song for you!
Gary: This is not the time to hold it back!
Nicholas McDonald – Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me (Elton John)
After 9 weeks on the X Factor, little Nick is totally independent! He knows how to turn on washing machine!
He is skeerd and doesn’t want to go home.
This ballad is more in Nick’s line. Some small changes from the original. Competently sung, but nothing outstanding. I think Joe McElderry sang this and did it better. Oh and he dueted with George Michael in the final.
Sharon: That is what we want from you!
Gary: You’ve saved it with this song, this is where you belong!
Nicole: You got yourself back in the race! You focused and pulled yourself together.
Louis: You nailed that song! Scotland, don’t let me down!
Luke Friend – Something About The Way You Look Tonight (Elton John)
Ugh, this isn’t the ideal song choice for Luke. He covered “Your Song” earlier in the competition and ended up in the bottom 2.
He makes a slow song even slower and even more dragging. I just want it to end already.
Sharon: That was a very different song for you to sing. That was totally out of your comfort zone… You should be really proud of yourself.
Gary: You change up songs every week …
Nicole: Ditto on what he just said! You have a very big heart and that shines through.
Louis: You change up songs every week, you deserve a place in the final!
Rough Copy – Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word (Elton John)
British boyband Blue covered this song years ago and even had Elton on the track. This performance isn’t far from the Blue version. It’s just more boring.
Nicole: Pack your backpacks because you deserve to be in the finals!
Louis: I love this song so much more than your other song!
Sharon: You nailed it! I loved it!
Gary: The group that makes it to the final goes on to do very well, so best of luck!
Sam Bailey – Candle In The Wind (Elton John)
Sam wants to be capable of selling records. Sorry dear, that ability is not really something you can learn.
Sam sounds good, but I miss something. Maybe it’s the arrangement? This performance just didn’t do much for me.
Gary: Sam, beautiful, effortless!
Nicole: You didn’t over-sing it.
Louis: You are the most consistent contestant in the competition!
Sharon: Thank you Sam, so much.
OVERALL: THIS SHOW WAS DAMN BORING! I think Luke’s “Best Thing I Never Had” was the best performance tonight.
Tomorrow: Leona Lewis and Michael Buble perform.
‘Oh shiitake mushrooms!’ Nicole Scherzinger nearly swears and Sharon Osbourne cries at Sam Bailey’s electric X Factor performance
It was Beyoncé versus Elton John week in the semi-final of the X Factor on Saturday night and it seems like the last performance of the night was the most highly-acclaimed.
Singer Sam Bailey got a standing ovation from the judges with her version of Elton John’s Candle In The Wind.
The newly slim star looked stunning in a black and white embroidered fishtail gown and she wore her hair up for the number, which was so good that judge Nicole Scherzinger seemed to nearly swear.

You made it your g-own! Nicole Scherzinger wears stunning black fishtail dress for X Factor semi-final
Every week, judge Nicole Scherzinger wows with her style choices on X Factor, but she seems to have pulled out all the stops with the black gown she wore on Saturday night’s show.
No wonder she wanted to make a huge impression, as it was the all-important semi-final this week with the theme of the night being Beyoncé versus Elton John.
The 35-year-old made her way onto the stage looking absolutely stunning and stopped to strike a very regal pose for the benefit of the audience and the people watching at home.
