Wow, $598K average so far…as I recall from MJ’s previous posts on this subject, S6 average was somewhere around $350K, right? In a supposedly weak economy with high gas prices, this seems pretty good.

    Great for the idols…

So glad they’re getting the love.

  4. 4 pj Aug 28th, 2008 at 3:14 pm

Glad it’s doing well, but I don’t think they are reaping the profits. I think their pay is set no matter how well the tour does. If a numbers person wants to correct me, that’s cool.

Hmmm- wonder why the Albany show on the 6th, which I went to, isn’t reporting yet? And, 2 more sold-out shows!

  6. 6 amy123 Aug 28th, 2008 at 3:16 pm

I’m glad too. I think this is the best top 10 that has ever been on Idol and it’s going to be really hard to top them on future seasons. I have really enjoyed seeing them on tour as a group and it’s going to be sad when the tour’s all over and they have to be split up. I’ve enjoyed this tour so much that I’m going to my third show next week. I’ve had a blast at the other two!!!

I don´t think they are… but I guess it has to be pretty bad to play when the arena looks only at his 50%…

The concert is doing well, it is a tribute to how good they are. I have been watching other talent shows and I do not believe that any of them that I have seen this year come close to the talent that as a whole the 2008 idols have. David C, Michael, and Carly are my favorites but David A sings like an angel and I found the rest of them at the concert were very good. I think 2009 AI is going to have to work really hard at not being a let down.

I believe that in addition to their performance pay, they get a cut of the souvenir profits. I think that’s something the attorney (for all of them this season) negotiated in another season. Anyhoo. . .the more people, the more sales of stuff, so that’s good for them.

Awesome to see two more sold out shows! (I went to the worcester one heh)

I agree with you 123abc456 that Michael, David C. and Carly are my favorites too, but I really enjoyed seeing all of them at the two shows I’ve attended. I’m curious to see how the Washington DC show did because that place was packed and there wasn’t an empty seat left. And I do agree that season 8 is gonna really have to be good to top this season’s group of talent.

I must correct my post (first one in this thread); AI6 average at this point was $404K (vs $598 this year).

  13. 13 gingerly Aug 28th, 2008 at 6:30 pm

I’m just happy that people are loving them. I hope this will translate to their future…This year was my first time to attend the Idol’s tour and I’m very happy to say that Chicago was sold out. Ultimately, however, their future is what matters so much more.

  14. 14 manny Aug 28th, 2008 at 7:49 pm

They could have sold out two nights in Worcester. Didn’t they in the past do two night there?

  15. 15 frogcooke Aug 28th, 2008 at 8:34 pm

I would of loved if they came to worcester twice… This is my first time following idol and the tour, so Ive no idea if theyve done two shows there previously.. would of been awesome

Worcester had two shows for Season 2 and Season 5.

Which season’s tour had the most revenue ?

    Anybody ?

Also, just curious to know, does anyone know how much each of the Idols make in terms of compensation for touring ?

  19. 19 seattle Aug 28th, 2008 at 11:23 pm

Little Boy Blue, in response to your question about how much the Idols make on tour:

Each Idol gets paid a set amount per show. Cook, as the winner, gets the most. Archie, as the runner-up, gets a little less, and so on down. Although I’m not sure that there is a drop for each number all the way down from 1 to 10. I seem to recall that after the top 4 or 5 they all get paid the same per show.

I don’t remember the exact numbers, but I think it’s something along the lines of Cook gets 1ike 10K per show, Archie gets 9K per show, etc., on down to about 5K for the lower finishers. Again, these numbers may be a bit off but you get the general idea. They make good money for a 3-month gig, but they aren’t gonna retire off it.

QueenJacyln over at TWoP found the numbers for the Albany show:

Oops! I missed that one. I’ll upate the post.

    $68.50, $39.50

Which season’s tour had the most revenue ?

    Anybody ?

Net revenue would be difficult to know (unless you saw the books) because we don’t know the relative costs for each tour.

Season 5 clearly made the most moolah. It had 59 dates reporting and sold 96% of it’s tickets. Having more concert dates and selling more tickets always helps, although ticket prices have gone up. That tour grossed $35.2 million and sold 645,782 tickets. The gross per concert though was $596,610 which is about the same as season 7 so far. The difference is the average ticket price. For Season 5, the average ticket price paid was $50.40 while this year it is $60.71.

(Season 5 numbers from Ken Barnes at Idol Chatter from his Season 5 concert report).

I remember reading that each of the Top Ten receives $100,000 salary for the Tour.
I don’t know about royalties from the souvenirs that sell.

  24. 24 sciencefan Aug 29th, 2008 at 8:14 am

    Hmm…

In another place, it says they earn a minimum of $100,000…

“Evidently, according to USA Today, a placer on American Idol could earn as much as $100,00 after being edged out of the competition.”
    http://clicktv.i.ph/blogs/clicktv

“Not only does the tour bring a major payday (rumored to be more than $100,000 per person)…”
    http://latimesblogs.latimes.com

“USA Today reports that it is at least a 6 figure salary ($100,000).”
    http://answers.yahoo.com

“It has been reported that tour participants are paid anywhere between $100,000 to $250,000 each.”
    http://davidarchuletafanblast.com

  25. 25 Hazehel Aug 29th, 2008 at 9:56 am

The pay for the idols on tour is not public, so all the numbers are probably just speculation. But here’s a few quotes -

“On tour, the stipend that the top 10 performers receive is not public, but rumors have placed the amount from $1,000 per show to $5,000 per show (that number was in reference to Ruben Studdard, the second-season winner, so perhaps the winners receive more). ”
    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17861805#tour

“HATE THE GAME: For headlining last year’s 39-city Pop-Tarts Presents American Idols Live Tour, Studdard received $5,000 per show”
    http://www.lasvegasmercury.com/2004/MERC-Mar-04-Thu-2004/23330463.html

“That accomplishment, which gets far less attention than making the top 24 or final 12, carries greater benefits: the chance to perform before arena audiences, develop fan bases and earn a six-figure payday. ”
    http://www.usatoday.com/life/television/news/2007-03-20-idol-tour_N.htm

If we can believe these numbers, then the minimum an idol on tour can get will be $100,000. And if the reported number for Ruben Studdard holds for David Cook (and it is probably that David Cook might get more), then David Cook might get a minumum of $250,000. Personally I wouldn’t be surprised if David Cook gets close to half a million all told. It might look like a lot of money but that’s only a tiny proportion of the gross, therefore poorly paid by the standard of other concert tours. But, I repeat, this is all speculation.
