Idol Christmas Compilation – An American Christmas – Released This Week

Remember Alexis Stone Lopez? (I had to google her–she made the wildcard round way back in Season 1) The Maynard Triplets? (Ditto–the sisters were rejected by the judges Season 4), Lindsey Cardinale? (Top 11 Season 4).
These illustrious ex-Idols, and a few of their mates (Jasmine Trias, Trenyce, Ayla Brown, Amy Davis) come together on a new Christmas compilation CD called American Christmas, released this week.
Just what you’ve been waiting for, right? Idols you haven’t thought about in ages singing your favorite Christmas carols!
I hate to be a Debbie Downer, especially around the holidays, but it’s hard to imagine there are throngs who’ve been waiting for the latest from Vonzell Solomon and Haley Scarnato. Unless an Idol hits the ground running career-wise once their season is over, it’s pretty much out-of-sight-out-of-mind…
Check out the track list after the jump…
I have to wonder if these ex-Idol projects ever turn a profit. Recent live shows featuring former Idols scheduled in California and Branson, MO were canceled or cut short this year. And I’m hearing this show, originally scheduled for December 6, has been postponed. Check back after January? I’m not holding my breath.
The current Idol Christmas tour featuring Chickezie, David Hernandez, Diana DeGarmo and Kimberley Locke has gotten some nice press–it could be the exception.
You can purchase American Christmas at both iTunes and Amazon

I really hope they do well. You can check out their myspace here .
I’m sure there are plenty of people interested in these idols (everyone had their favs :happy_tb:), hopefully enough to make their album successful.
I just saw the Maynard Triplets’ audition last week on AI Rewind and I actually thought they were really good! American Idol was the wrong show for them though — they should try America’s Got Talent!
I liked the Maynard triplets too. They were funny. One was pissed that Simon called them fat, the other was like fuggedabout it we are fat! (Actually only one of them was sorta fat) They could be like a novelty act, we sing, we tell jokes, we wear tight, pink dresses, lol.
I don’t buy xmas music so I will take a pass on this, but I have been waiting for both Trenyce and Frenchie to do something mainstream, I guess the wait continues.
Good luck to all! I wouldn’t group Vonzell with Haley. Vonzell came in 3rd and was my fave that season. (I knew Carrie would win but wasn’t that taken with her, nor with Bo.) Of course, no denying that Carrie has become a star and we don’t hear much from Vonzell.
Currently selling at 48,967 on amazon. 48,966 CDs are selling better than this one. Advertised as AI finalists, some of the artists were not finalists. Kind of weird–Vonzell Solomon, Trenyce and Frenchie Davis are talented; some of the others can sing–like Ayla Brown. I wonder if Chenoa Records will make back their investment? The song choices aren’t inspired at all, and I’d never assign Haley Scarnato to Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas. She’s a “Santa Baby” girl. Vonzell would have done great with Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas. Unless Santa Claus is Coming to Town is really jazzed up, it seems like a waste of her.
I clicked though to that weird Idols show that’s been canceled. Better “stars”. I laughed at pictures for Rickey Smith and Melissa McGhee though–it’s their Idol pictures. They haven’t had one photo shoot since then? And Gina’s picture looks like it was done by her neighbor, the budding photographer.
I feel bad for these guys. People who are just good singers (don’t write, don’t play instruments) should go directly to musical theater (or dinner theater). There’s just little market for them in the music industry (I guess Carrie Underwood is an exception–she just sings, right?)
Ouch :hmm1_ee:
RJ Helton! I love him! If he didn’t just sing one song on it, I’d probably buy it just for him.
I’m a fan of Lindsey Cardinale and Amy Davis (don’t mock). Yes they did not have the best runs on the show, but I have heard their post idol music on their myspace pages and am quite impressed. They are much more talented than we saw on the show. It’s a shame that many people came away from those seasons thinking they sucked and could not sing. Meanwhile people like Sanjaya made it as far as he did in his season.
Linda Cardinale can sing. Honestly, not sure about Amy Davis. She’s very beautiful though and seemed to be an exceptionally nice person.
Not sure about all of them, but Amy Davis writes almost all of her own songs. She’s definitely that singer/songwriter type that COULD have done well had she been given more air time in Hollywood Week and had chosen a different song Top 24 Week.
Also, Carrie has co-written several of her songs. One on her first album and like four on her second. She also wrote one of the songs Kristy Lee Cook’s album.
I also like Amy Davis, her last perfomance was bad, which is a shame cause I think she could have shown more. Her music is very interesting.
It’s actually the second edition in that compilation. There was another one released last year, with a slightly different cast of characters (Lisa Leuschner, for instance, was on that one but not this one).
Poor Lindsey Cardinale choked on the show. She’s actually a wonderful singer, and has some pretty nice alt/country type stuff up on her My Space.
There’ve been several music compilations from Idol also rans. They keep churning them out, so I suppose someone is buying them. They must be cheap to make-low overhead.
As for the old names and success, it seems to be that a few can get somewhere on their own, even though others who did much better in their season really got nowhere. Among non-finalists, I would say the most successful are (although most of them would have been considered total flops if they made the finals considering their expectations, many finalists have done much worse):
Ayla Brown (5) – had moderate airplay with her songs over the past couple years, even though it isn’t a big selling album
Brianna Taylor (5) – although she was helped considerably by a second TV appearance, she had recorded before appearing on Real World and sold really well (at least digitally)
Brooke Barrettsmith (5) – quite popular in the contemporary Christian circles with decent sales and significant airplay
Frenchie Davis (2) – although she had a sympathy vote for a controversial decision, she has become a mainstay on Broadway, and done some recording
Jeff Johnson (4) – while he didn’t sell much, he ranked high on the charts for quite a while in Christian music, reaching the top 20
Josiah Leming (7) – not sure what its physical sales are, but he sold a lot on iTunes
Sarah Burgess (6) – is getting a fair bit of airplay on many stations, especially in smaller markets
With one exception, none of them even made the semi-finals.
You are right, they are probably cheap to produce as they don’t require big name promotions or special effects. Since SoundScan may not have every avenue for sales covered (I don’t think they follow independently-sold albums), they probably have sold a bit better than the charts show.
The also-rans also have dozens of individual albums out as well.
Sorry, this post can be deleted. I screwed up the links I was posting. Trying again below.

I do remember Alexis Lopez and thought she was one of the better ones that first season. She seemed not quite ready and might have done better in a different season, it is hard to tell. Sadly, I also remember several blogs commenting that she needed a bra, LOL, and she seemed too innocent to realize she needed one. Very young presentation, but seemed to have raw talent. Odds are against most people, so I don’t think there is a time limit, the contestants need something else going on outside Idol to make it. The best thing about idol is the exposure, not idol itself, so never say never.
Idolfanatic–I went to those links. I didn’t know that Lindsey Cardinale was such a southern/country singer. Re: Amy Davis–maybe she couldn’t hear during her performance on top 24 night? I agree that she sounds much better on her myspace player.
wow- now its 65,975 in Music on amazon…
Amy should consider herself lucky. Unfortunately, I could hear her. The problem with that theory is she sang it equally as badly the next night when she was eliminated.
All joking aside, it is pretty pathetic that a show with the budget of American Idol cannot supply in-ear monitors for the Top 24 and beyond rounds. The fact that the “judges” don’t have in-ear monitors makes their judgments pretty useless.
