Nigel Lythgoe Plans Michael Jackson So You Think You Can Dance Special

Friday, Nigel Lythgoe and Paula Abdul tweeted back and forth about Paula possibly choreographing a Michael Jackson tribute this week.

Nigel is twittering more detail right now–he says song clearance issues will keep the special from happening this week. But, it looks like the plans are becoming more ambitious than just a group routine:

  • At the same time as auditioning we’re trying to put together a major tribute to him Michael’s music works in every dance genre for the show
  • Mia has chosen the song she likes, we’ve spoken to Wade. I’ve left messages for Paula. I’ve spoken to Shane. We have to make this happen!!?
  • There is a problem clearing Michael’s music at the moment. We are trying to make contact with Sony to get clearance on an all Michael SYTYCD
  • If we can make this ’special’ happen it is thanks to many of you “Tweeters” out there who all had the same idea. “Twitter-Power” is awesome!
  • Don’t get carried away everyone. It won’t be the NEXT show these things take time to organize, clear and choreograph. I’ll keep you posted.
  • To the guy who called the idea of the ‘Special’ “opportunistic.” you’re an @#*hole.

That last tweet…lulz!

  • This will be so amazing. Wade Robson also contributing….awesome!

Yeah that last tweet by Nigel was so appropriate.

  • I love Nigel. I openly admit to being a Nigel fangirl.

Wade’s career actually came about because of impersonating Michael Jackson as a small child and impressing Jackson himself, so that’s really sweet.

  • We’ll going to have a “Michael Jackson” night on SYTYCD!!! And Wade is choreographing!!!!! So are Mia and Paula!!! YEAH~~~ I’m curious and excited. (Hope Jason can stay long enough to do some MJ. )

  • This would be so, so amazing. I hope they can make it happen.

I guess I don’t understand song clearance very well. I figured the fact that this show is produced by the same company as AI and AI has had plenty of MJ songs sung on the show before would mean that SYTYCD wouldn’t have any problems clearing his songs.

  • This will be AWESOME, given Wade’s involvement with the music and dance of MJ. And Mia is a fantastic choreographer so along with Paula this will be fantastic. Good on Nigel for taking the first steps. I wish the Idols could sing his music, but they will be on tour :(

  • The death of Michael might be creating a temporary legal limbo, at least until the executors formally take over their duties.

BET is apparently doing an MJ Tribute tonight – not sure if they had a smaller tribute already planned before Michael died, but I didn’t see any mention of that on Friday, when BET announced their lineup for the BET Awards on Sunday. How is that for a quick turnaround?

Opportunistic? – no one would have been more thrilled to have his music used to showcase up and coming dancing talent than MJ.

  • I love Nigel. That is all.

  • This is a great idea. I would love to see different styles of dance to MJ’s music. This should definitely happen.

  • Opportunistic? – no one would have been more thrilled to have his music used to showcase up and coming dancing talent than MJ.

Total aggreance, he would love it.

I love Nigel. That is all.

    Me too!

  • good response Nigel. how is it opportunitic?. it’s a tribute to show how much everyone appreciates his music. shld be fun to watch.

  • BootStar Im with you Nigel ROCKS lol

  • Go Nigel!!

This will be an awesome event…..yep an event! Can’t wait!

  • I love Nigel too, and I love SYTYCD. I think this is a great idea and I see it only as a wonderful tribute.

  • I think a dance tribute would be AWESOME! I was hoping they’d do something! I can’t wait to see it. And, yeah, the Wade Robeson routine should be AMAZING!!

  • This is a great idea – maybe for TOP 4? à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Michael Jacksonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ night on SYTYCD would be awesome. Since American Idol is presenting Michael Jackson week – TOP 13 on Monday, it is probably best to wait it out. And get those clearances.

There are two tributes tonight in Detroit, Michigan. One is at the Motown Museum. What a cool place to visit!

Celebrating Michael’s music through voice and dance would have pleased him.

  • I’d actually like to see Wade do a tribute dance himself in addition to choreographing a couple. Let him do the guest dance for the results show. You gotta love Wade doing MJ moves….

    Here at age 8 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1d33-HgdZbI
Not sure that some of those moves are appropriate for an 8 year old but hey, whatever… :innocent1_tb:

And later during his Project show http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eC06ujdeb-E

  • This just makes me all kinds of happy, I love this idea and I can’t wait to watch.

  • I love love love this idea! What a beautiful and appropriate way to celebrate Michael Jackson and his music, through dance, a medium he loved so much himself. Wade’s involvement is perfect, and it would be amazing to see Paula finally choreograph on SYTYCD. I think it’s a perfect idea.

  • I’m really excited about this. I think it’s great that MJ will be remembered for his dancing, and not just his music. Can’t wait to see what they come up with.

  • At the same time as auditioning weà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re trying to put together a major tribute to him Michaelà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s music works in every dance genre for the show

Ha! That was what I wanted them to do. It should a fantastic tribute.

  • Wow, this sounds amazing. Michael Jackson impacted the world of dance just as much as he impacted the world of music. Wade was the first choreographer who came to my mind. So glad he’s involved. I hope it happens. Also, I’d post a link to a tubey vid of Wade dancing an MJ tribute, but the site is very weird for me right now and doesn’t show any of the regular editing buttons. (ANyone else having problems?)

  • That’s awesome. It just reminded me also about the re-airing of MJ week on AI. I hope that is still on tomorrow. Watching the performances on tv sure beats watching them on my computer.

  • I don’t know how to twitter but I wish someone would twitter Nigel and get him to plan a dance with “Billie Jean” performed by David Cook. This is a thrilling arrangement of the song.
