Season 7 - Idol Gives Back — Video Recap

Video!

My recap from last night is finally up. Argh. I dread recapping tonight’s marathon. 2 1/2 hours! But for once, I’m not going to complain about the extra-long Idol tonight. It’s all for a good cause, y’all. I’m even going to put aside my cynicism for one night. Sure, the motives of TPTB are never entirely pure, but who cares? The end result is a good one, so I’m not going to sweat it.

Besides, according to this recent New York Times article, last year’s 75+ million dollars appears to have been well managed and went to many needy charities. It’s all good.

One of the organizations involved with Idol Gives Back is the One campaign to end global hunger. They’ll be asking for support tonight. If you’d like to sign up, I made it easy. Just use the handy dandy banner on your left.

Spoilers for tonight. Pictures from the Kodak Sunday night.

I really want them to have the SYTYCDancers on all the results shows. I have watched that opening number at least 10 times tonight. Fantastic.

I’ve seen most of the performances now, loved Fergie and Heart, and Carrie. I wanna know what happened to Maroon 5. :( Couldn’t we lose the Miley performance that was not “See You Again” (I love that song…) in favor of Maroon 5? Maybe they’re saving it to air later.

I hope they raise a lot of money for their cause.

    Heh, yeah, me too. :tongue1_tb:

How the heck did they EVER clear Shout to the Lord? Even without the mention of Jesus in that song, it is pretty blatantly Christian. That was pretty cool, and they did a really good job especially with the choir.

Annie Lennox was really good (my second favorite moment of the night, right behind the closing song), and the rest of it? Pretty much bored me to tears with the exception of the first minute or so of the opening number.

  5. 55 inky Apr 10th, 2008 at 1:02 am

can anyone tell me what song was playing during the clip about malaria?

I believe that was “Breathe Me” by Sia (love her)

    yay dancers!
I loved the Snoop Dogg/Charlie Wilson performance. Annie Lennox made me cry.

David Cook in his part on *Don’t Stop the Music* =HOT :wub_tb:

Keeps up her prayer, don’t let it be him tomorrow night please…

Annie Lennox showed how it should be done. Miley Cyrus showed how it should never be done, twice. Por que? Mariah’s performance makes me think all the performers next week will be better than she was tonight. Randy was cool on bass though. Well she has never been a performer imho anyway. I think I saw more of her hand than her face, but at least tonights outfit didn’t come from the Tranny Hooker Imporium. Thank Jeebus, lol. Love ya MJ!

inky, is that the song that was on Gray’s Anatomy?

  9. 59 J.S.G. Apr 10th, 2008 at 1:53 am

Did not get the Fergie / Heart song. Really liked the vocal, admire Fergie’s athleticism but don’t understand why she had to crawl around the flor like a barracuda. Was that really necessary to sell that song?

But Fergie’s got a great voice(she’s my favorite of that genre whatever that genre is ) and her song with John Legend was terrific. She would have easily won AI.

Milly Cyrus won’t win Idol but she is a rising comedic actress as she demonsttrated in her exchange with Billy Crystal.

And Carrie Underwood really connected with that song. Her most moving performance ever.

After last night, totally wanted Syesha gone this week. But you know, she really shines during those group numbers. The best of the bunch really. She can dance and easily lifts her vocals to another level.

Thought the segments produced in Kentucky, New York and New Orleans were really well done this year. What Brad Pitt is doing is and how he is doing it…such great work.

  10. 60 NOLA Apr 10th, 2008 at 2:04 am

Brad is doing so much for New Orleans. He and Angelina bought a home here and he said he is putting his career on hold until he builds these houses. He truly puts his money where his mouth is. He rolls up his sleeves and actually builds houses. A great humanitarian.

So the changed the words in Shout to the Lord.
    No more “my Jesus,” Idol?

Jesus is back in the iTunes recording of the song. The studio version is really good. There’s a little OTT screechiness from a couple of the girls at the end but otherwise very nice.

Annie Lennox was a stah tonight! As she should be.

abby! :laugh_tb: We obviously are on the same wavelength with Mariah!

  14. 64 Chicago-sally Apr 10th, 2008 at 5:37 am

I was listening to Syesha’s solos and she has a very pretty voice. I don’t know why she’s not connecting with the judges and/or the public — besides that she’s an actress and her performances are “safe”.

“OMG, TMZ (the tv show) is doing a clip on David A’s “difficulty” picking “Angels” to sing last night and it is HILARIOUS. They’re totally calling him out for pretending he’d basically never heard it before and showing bits of his youtube clip. And then dubbing Napoleon Dynamite’s voice over his. OMG hilarious!!!”

Yep, I saw that too. One of the probs with David A for me is that he’s been prepped since he was a baby to be a singing star and he comes off as a total innocent. All those songs he chooses he’s sung over and over and over elsewhere…and why hasn’t he been signed by someone? Could it be dad wants too much control? Just thinking.

  15. 65 Chicago-sally Apr 10th, 2008 at 6:24 am

MJ I agree, Fergie has quite a voice, she’s good. Surprised she’s not bigger than she is. She could be at the very top.

  16. 66 dulce Apr 10th, 2008 at 6:47 am

Much MUCH better than last year.

    Interesting Tidbits:

    1. Opening number was AWESOME when it really shouldn’t have been.
    2. Annie Lennox is all types of AMAZING.
    3. Fergie can SING! I knew it. Sad John Legend didn’t do more though.
    4. Carrie Underwood gets better and better.
    5. Archie still can’t remember lyrics or the fact that he has actually sung “Angels” numerous times in the past. Does he meet DSM IV criteria for early Alzheimers yet?
    6. Mariah Carey has officially lost her voice…at least the quality that made it special to begin with. She’s still amazing. I spent most of my childhood just in awe of her.
    7. Closing Number: DC and Carly brought it home. I LOVE both of their voices.

Tomorrow Bottom 3: Carly, Syesha, DC with DC headed back to the chairs first. He needs a scare. Based on what I heard tonight on the pop/gospel numbers they did….I am certain that Cook can bring this home. He just can’t afford another iffy night. Ah….I hope Syesha is gone. I just don’t want to deal with her trying to out-Mariah-Mariah when it’s obviously never going to happen. But no…I think Carly is gone…truly gone. Not enough of a fan base to save her when the casual vote went Jason Castro’s way.

Wow, the recorded version of “Shout to the Lord” really IS beautiful. This could be one of the best versions I’ve heard, and being involved in church music for the past 15 years, I’ve heard a lot of them.

The gospel choir is still unnecessary though. Just the Idols and their harmonizing would have been sufficient on this song.

Surprised she’s not bigger than she is. She could be at the very top.

Um, correct me if I’m wrong but hasn’t Fergie had 5 hits from “The Duchess” and working on her 6th one with “Finally”? And “Big Girls Don’t Cry” was at the top of pop radio this summer for like 11 or 12 weeks (or longer). I’d say that’s pretty big.

David Cook’s recorded version of “Innocent” - two thumbs up.

  18. 68 sciencefan Apr 10th, 2008 at 8:10 am

I thought Terri Hatcher was pretty good for someone who’s not a singer.
    I didn’t like Miley’s singing.
I didn’t know who Fergie was, I mean I had heard her name before, but when they announced her, I didn’t catch her name. I had never seen her before. Is she gay? That was pretty funky how she was petting those other ladies.
    I enjoyed Robin Williams.
I busted out laughing a couple of other times during the night.
I didn’t like Carrie Underwood’s song, but she was absolutely gorgeous.

I just looked on iTunes and it didn’t allow me download - only pre-order. ???

  20. 70 justshootme Apr 10th, 2008 at 9:13 am

Annie Lenox was just … beyond amazing for me. All those big belters should pay attention. That is how you have a huge vocal AND portray emotional complexity in a song. She should be mentoring instead of freakin’ Mariah.

  21. 71 Steph Apr 10th, 2008 at 9:22 am

ETA: David Cook looks good in confetti, so he’d better not go home tomorrow.

    lol cheese! yes, he does!

i loved jimmy kimmel last night. he told simon to button his shirt!

LOl, no she is very straight, I think she is engaged to some hunk whom I never heard of. She used to be the singer in Black Eyed Peas which had the huge hit “Where is the Love” which Justin Timberlake had something to do with. I saw the BEP in concert here in London and they were amazing and she has a phenomenal voice and stamina on stage! Never stopped leaping around.

  23. 73 bean99 Apr 10th, 2008 at 11:01 am

Fergie’s engaged to Josh Duhamel from the show Las Vegas. He’s very, very cute.

I still can’t figure out why they’d have Miley singing twice when they had to cut others out and still went over. Other than the live portion, they already had it produced. :blink_tb:

  24. 74 oh brother! Apr 10th, 2008 at 11:09 am

Fergie is engaged to actor Josh Duhamel.

I think the reason Fergie isn’t a bigger star is that her stardom feels like work. She doesn’t make stardom look effortless. I always feel every calculation and thought that goes into putting Fergie the Star together.

Syesha was very good in the group numbers, and for a while I’ve thought that she would do better in a girl group than as a solo singer. (Likewise, I’ve thought that Carly should front a band, which would decrease the pressure on her to look like a perfect pop star.)

  25. 75 Giggy Apr 10th, 2008 at 11:12 am

I was distracted most of the night but I LOVED Annie Lennox and I liked Mariah, too. She’s at her best when she goes back to her roots and sings those kind of songs. IMO.

  26. 76 HollandX Apr 10th, 2008 at 12:18 pm

:( I laughed hard during Robin Williams.
